LOS ALAMITOS, CA—OCTOBER 14, 2022—All American Derby winner A Pollitical Candy V, Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity winner Bomb Cyclone, AQHA Champion Golden Boi and multiple graded derby winners Scoops Dynasty, and Whizkey Glasses will headline a tremendous collection of accomplished in the 400-yard trials to the Grade 1, $982,050 Los Alamitos Super Derby here on Sunday night.

First post for the 10-race program is 5:40 p.m. (PDT).

Ten berths will be up for grabs for the meet’s most important derby to be held on Sunday, November 6. A total of 35 derby hopefuls will be in action with five trial divisions ready to decide the top 10 finalists. The trials will start in race six at approximately 7:44 p.m. and will continue through the final race on the card, which is the 10th race at 9:23 p.m.

Rosenthal Ranch’s Bomb Cyclone will get the cavalcade of stars rolling in the opening trial, as he’ll make his California return for his first start since trouncing to victory in the Grade 1, $2.037 million Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity last December. He’s only race twice this season, first winning his trial to the All American Derby by 3 ¼ lengths and then running fourth in the $809,000 final.

The older of Cyber Attack, who last week posted the fastest time to the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity, Bomb Cyclone will start from post number six with jockey Eduardo Nicasio aboard for trainer Chris O’Dell. In his previous two Los Alamitos starts, Bomb Cyclone won for fun from along the rail.

Bomb Cyclone’s rivals will include Bobby Cox’s Inspyre, the winner of the Grade 2 Dash For Cash Futurity last year, multiple Grade 1 finalist Chizum, and All American Oaks finalist Toxic Relationship. This is an excellent group as it’ll also feature the stakes winner Letty Cartel, PCQHRA Breeders Derby finalist Benevolent, and the Apollitical Jess gelding Apollitical Famous V.

Valeriano Racing Stable LLC. has a powerful lineup of horses in these trials. After sending Apollitical Famous V in the opening heat, Valeriano Racing Stable will be represented by recent PCQHRA Breeders Derby winner Sweet Dasha Fire in the second heat.

The filly will be taking on Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas’ Golden State Derby runner-up Set For It, plus 2021 Ruidoso Futurity finalist Jess Fire Me and the stakes placed Jess Hez On Fire. Every trial race tonight will feature a field of seven runners.

Valeriano Racing Stables’ top star is A Pollitical Candy V, the winner of the Grade 1 All American Derby and Grade 1 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs, who’ll be in action in the third trial. The superstar gelding by Apollitical Jess will now set his sights on the All American Derby and Los Alamitos Super Derby double, an achievement only Dashs Dream (1984) and Old Habits (1999) have attained in the combined history of Quarter Horse racing’s two greatest derbies.

Now trained by Heath Taylor and to be ridden by his Ruidoso rider Juan Pulido, A Pollitical Candy V will start from the outside post seven against a field that includes Dunn Ranch’s Whizkey Glasses.

All seven horses in this race have competed in at least one Grade 1 stakes race during their respective careers. Back at Los Alamitos after running second in the Grade 2 El Primero Del Año Derby, Whizkey Glasses will make his first start since winning the Grade 2 Heritage Place Derby on May 29.

He daylighted top juveniles to win the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity last year and finished third to Bomb Cyclone in the Two Million last year. This outstanding group will also feature Ruidoso Derby finalist Imperativ, 2021 All American Futurity finalist Press My Hero, Two Million finalist Apollitical J Streak, two-time Grade 1 finalist Eye On The Sky, and Corona Yo, who was third behind Scoops Dynasty and A Pollitical Candy V in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby earlier this year.

M&G Farms, Inc.’s Golden Boi will headline the fourth trial while looking to continue his unbeaten sophomore campaign. Already three for three this season, Golden Boi won the El Primero earlier this year and his most recent start was a ¾ length win in the Sgt Pepper Feature Handicap on August 27.

Ruben Lozano is back on the saddle after taking about a month off to mend a minor injury. Lozano has ridden Golden Boi in each of his career starts. A winner in seven of nine outings, Golden Boi won the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity for trainer Valentin Zamudio last year. He’ll start from post five in this trial.

Dunn Ranch’s In Hott Pursuit, who was second to Golden Boi in the Ed Burke and third to Whizkey Glasses in the Golden State Million last year, will make his first start in California this year after racing twice at Ruidoso Downs in the summer. Multiple graded stakes finalists Dasha Good Reason and Unavailable lead the rest of this field.

The hottest sophomore on the grounds will headline the final trial of the night.

Edward and Von Zae McNelis’ Scoops Dynasty, a three-time stakes winner this season including the Grade 1 Winter Derby and Grade 2 Golden State Derby, will start from the outside post seven in this race. To be ridden by Armando Cervantes or trainer Monty Arrossa, Scoops Dynasty is a perfect five for five this season.

This field will also feature All American Derby finalist Apollitical Eyeopener, Winter Derby finalist Amadeus MV, Golden State Derby third place finisher Dasha Dynasty, and multiple graded stakes finalist Watch Out, plus Stuck In Probate and Arimathea.
