SHELBYVILLE, IN–JUNE 27, 2024–Ricardo Martinez's Nachor Secret and Pattie Marshall's Red Headed Beach are two of 34 state-bred sophomores entered in Tuesday's 400-yard Blue River Derby (R) trials at Horseshoe Indianapolis.
A gray Habits Secret colt trained by Martinez, Nachor Secret has won the first two outs of his 3-year-old season, and he will be stretching out in distance off of his three-quarter length victory in the 350-yard, $99,000 Harley Greene Derby (R) on June 1. The colt drew the rail post and will be ridden by Martin Munoz in the last of four trials.
Red Headed Beach is coming off of a second-place finish to Nachor Secret in the Harley Greene Derby. Still, the sorrel daughter of Escondido Beach is the top money earner among the 34 Blue River Derby hopefuls with a bankroll of $393,869. The filly has won seven of nine races -- all at Horseshoe Indianapolis -- and she won three stakes during her 2-year-old season, including the 350-yard, $205,000 Miss Roxie Little Futurity (R) on a sloppy track on October 28.
Red Headed Beach drew the rail post and will be ridden by Rolando Pina for trainer Tim Eggleston in the third heat.
The 10 fastest qualifiers will meet in the July 20, $100,000-added Blue River Derby final.
