Prairie Meadows Presents Quarter Horse Stakes Tripleheader on Sunday

ALTOONA, IA–JULY 4, 2024–Three official American Quarter Horse stakes -- led by the Grade 3, 350-yard Keokuk Stakes -- will be contested Sunday at Prairie Meadows.

Bradbury Racing's Nothin Like You and Brenda Reiswig's Apollitical Payoff are two of the seven aged sprinters entered in the $40,000 Keokuk Stakes. A homebred 5-year-old Favorite Cartel gelding trained by John Hammes, Nothin Like You is coming off of a fourth-place finish, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner The Swamp, in the 400-yard, $60,000 Leo Stakes (G1) at Remington Park on May 4. Nothin Like You has won eight of his 13 starts at Prairie Meadows, including last year's Keokuk Stakes and 400-yard, $35,000 Two Rivers Stakes.

Nothin Like You drew post 3 and will be ridden by Stormy Smith.

Apollitical Payoff is a homebred 5-year-old son of world champion Apollitical Jess trained by Jason Olmstead. The bay gelding is coming off of a Remington Park spring campaign during which he earned $47,838 from four starts and ran fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind winner Jess Good Wine, in the 440-yard, $250,000 Debbie Schauf Remington Park Championship (G1) on June 1.

Apollitical Payoff drew post 6 and will be ridden by Ramiro Garcia.

Sunday's three stakes include the 350-yard, $99,375 Prairie Meadows Gold Derby, and the 350-yard, $64,320 Cyclone Derby (R) for Iowa-bred sophomores.

Jo Rice's Cardiac Cowboy drew post 4 and will be ridden by Ramiro Garcia for trainer Jason Olmstead in the Prairie Meadows Gold Derby. A homebred son of Flying Cowboy 123, the gelding has won three of his five races at Prairie Meadows, including last year's 350-yard, $204,000 Valley Junction Futurity (G3).

Cardiac Cowboy has banked $236,326 from 13 starts in Iowa and Oklahoma, and he is the fastest Prairie Meadows Gold Derby qualifiers from three trials run June 23.

Christine Hovey's Five Bar Phi headlines Sunday's Cyclone Derby. The fastest qualifier from two trials contested on June 22, Five Bar Phi is a son of Five Bar Cartel trained by Ed Hardy. The brown gelding is coming off of a 2 1/4-length victory in his trial, and he's won four of his five races at Prairie Meadows, including last year's 330-yard, $88,000 Hawkeye Futurity (R) for Iowa-bred juveniles.

Five Bar Phi drew post 10 and will be ridden by Angel Ramirez.
