LOS ALAMITOS, CA–SEPTEMBER 12, 2024–Dunn Ranch's Pattys Saint will look for a season sweep of the three richest races for fillies and mares at Los Alamitos when she headlines a terrific field in the Grade 1 $125,000 Mildred Vessels Memorial Handicap on Saturday at Los Alamitos.
Already in 2024, Pattys Saint has won the Grade 1, $100,000 Charger Bar Handicap and the $100,000 Abigail Kawananakoa Stakes.
The next test for the terrific 6-year-old mare by Jess Got Easier is the Mildred Vessels at 400 yards, a race in which she'll face Gentry Farms' Fearless Moon, the 2023 AQHA champion 3-year-old filly, Brad Williams and Don Forbes' Jes An Angel, one of the top sophomore fillies in the country last year and a winner of over a half-million dollars, and recent stakes winners Frivolous and Nymphette.
A full field of 10 distaffers will be in action in the Mildred Vessels with the winner earning a presumptive invitation to the 2024, $600,000 Champion of Champions.
The road to victory in this six-figure event goes through the outstanding Pattys Saint. The R.L. Harrison-bred runner scored her 20th career win, and her 15th stakes win when she won the Kawananakoa in her last start on June 15.
On that night, Pattys Saint beat three of her rivals in Saturday's Mildred Vessels and did so by leaving the gate sharply and pulling away from the field in the second half of the race. Pattys Saint will now look to win the Mildred Vessels for the second time in her career, her first victory in this event coming in 2022.
Now trained by Monty Arrossa and to be ridden once again by Eduardo Nicasio, Pattys Saint has already won the Mildred Vessels, Charger Bar and Abigail over the course of her career, but a win on Saturday would make her the first to win all three in single season. She also won the $60,000 Miss Princess on May 5 while scoring wins in seven of her last eight starts. She'll start from post number five.
Trained by Juan Aleman, Fearless Moon was sensational in her second outing of 2024, winning an allowance event by two-lengths while posting the meet's fastest clocking at 350 yards of :17.35 on July 14. In her only other starts of the year, Fearless Moon ran second in the Charger Bar and will now look to avenge that defeat. Her divisional championship in 2023 came courtesy of four appearances in major events for 3-year-olds. While she did not come away with a win, she did run second in the $715,000 All American Oaks and third in the $478,000 Rainbow Oaks. She also ran in the Los Alamitos Super Derby here.
Ed Allred's Nymphette was third in the Abigail and second to Pattys Saint in the 2022 Mildred Vessels. The James Glenn, Jr. trainee is among the strong finishers in the female division, but she needs to break close to Pattys Saint and Fearless Moon for her potent late kick to result in victory.
Frivolous, who gave trainer Felix Gonzalez his 1,000th career win at Los Alamitos, when she won the Florentine Stakes will break from the outside post and could be the surprise package in this race.
