BY MICHAEL CUSORTELLI
PHOENIX, AZ–DECEMBER 7, 2024–Twenty-seven 3-year-olds, led by local stakes winners Hes My Sweetheart and Wicked Cowgirl Smart, are entered in Tuesday's 400-yard AQRA Turf Paradise Open Derby trials.
The 10 fastest qualifiers from Tuesday's three heats will meet in the December 31, $30,000-added AQRA Turf Paradise Open Derby final.
A chestnut son of the Walk Thru Fire stallion Panama Wes trained by Adolfo Armendariz Celaya for owner Fernando Canales, Hes My Sweetheart will be making his first official start since May 2, when the gelding scored a half-length victory in the 350-yard, $65,000 AQRA Turf Paradise Spring Derby (R) for Arizona-breds. Hes My Sweetheart drew post 4 and will be ridden by Mark Jasso in the first trial.
Wicked Cowgirl Smart is a homebred daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 owned by J Lazy Six Racing. Trained by David J. Williams, the filly has won six of her 10 races and has earned $98,667, and her four wins in five outs at Turf Paradise include a wire-to-wire, 1 1/2-length victory in the March 25, $65,000 AQRA President's Open Spring Derby.
Wicked Cowgirl Smart drew post 8 and will be ridden by Mark Jasso in the second heat.
