LOS ALAMITOS, CA–FEBRUARY 27, 2025–Ten Grade 1 stakes finalists led by Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity qualifiers Ohana Spirit and Apolitical Chilitas are among the 29 sophomore fillies that will race in the trials for the Grade 1, $430,000 Los Alamitos Oaks here on Saturday night.
The nine-race program will also feature a $31,016 carryover in the Pick Six with the sequence starting in race number four. With the new money expected to be wagered in the Pick Six on Saturday, the total pool could be well over $125,000. There will be four Oaks trials each to be contested at 400 yards. The fillies with the 10 fastest times will advance to the final on Saturday, March 22.
The opening trial might be the strongest of the four, as it will feature four Grade 1 finalist including the previously mentioned Apolitical Chilitas plus Ed Burke Million Futurity winner Up To Party. Owned by Licon Farm and Ranch LLC, Apolitical Chilitas is a two-time Grade 1 finalist as she also qualified for the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity last year.
Trained by Jose Flores, the Apollitical Jess filly will enter this trial having won or finished second in five of her nine career starts, but she’s been second in both her Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million trial. Cruz Mendez will pilot her from post number one.
In addition to the Ed Burke, Dunn Ranch’s Up To Party also won the PCQHRA Breeders Futurity last year. However, she’ll enter her Oaks trials after her first career loss when running third to the outstanding Lethal Cowboy 123 in their Los Alamitos Two Million trial.
The opening Oaks heat will also feature Golden State Million finalist Competent and recent Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Derby finalist Powerful Wise Lady.
The second trial does not feature any Grade 1 stakes finalists, however, there are five winning fillies among the seven starters including James Sills and Abel Flores’ Shaken Goin, a four-time stakes finalist during her juvenile campaign.
Shaken Goin's resume includes a third-place finish in the $199,672 Mystery Futurity and a fifth-place finish in the $536,000 Black Gold Futurity both held at Will Rogers Downs last year. M & G Farms’ Terra Fina, Ed Allrd’s Collegian, and Katsy and Monte Cluck’s Streakin Sis have all posted impressive wins here recently and should also contend in this trial.
David Hinkins’ VGK Zigfield Follies, recent Grade 1 Winter Derby finalist, and Cade Burns’ Naive, who qualified for the Restricted Grade 1 Governor’s Cup Futurity last year, are among the top contenders in the third heat. Gentry Farms’ Beach Walk, a ¾ length winner in her Los Alamitos Two Million trial, also figures to be a prominent contender in this Oaks trial.
Gentry Farms’ Ohana Spirit, fifth in the Two Million final and a recent allowance winner here on January 26, will headline the final Oaks trial. The Tempting Dash filly has won three races in her nine career starts and in addition to the Two Million, she also ran sixth in the Grade 1 Rainbow Futurity last season.
Reliance Ranches LLC’s Hott Temptation is another top contender in this race. She was part of the Grade 1 Heritage Place Futurity field last year and has posted three strong efforts at Los Alamitos since arriving here last fall.
The Tempting Dash filly was third against Lethal Cowboy 123 in a trial to the Golden State Million in her Los Alamitos debut before winning an allowance event and then running second to Grade 1 finalist Train B Taka in the Holiday Handicap on December 26. Mas Prieta and Malynche, a pair of Governor’s Cup finalists last year, will also be part of this trial.
