Fastest Qualifier Broadbent Headlines Sunday's $349,620 New Mexican Spring Futurity

BY MICHAEL CUSORTELLI

SUNLAND PARK, NM–APRIL 3,2025–Broadbent, a sorrel son of Eye Am King and the fastest qualifier, is one of 10 state-bred juveniles entered back in Sunday’s 300-yard, $349,620 New Mexican Spring Futurity (RG2) at Sunland Park.

An $88,000 purchase from breeder MJ Farms at last year’s Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale, Broadbent is trained by Eric Valenzuela for the Tungsten Racing Partnership. The gelding made his career debut with a wire-to-wire, 1 1/4-length victory in the fourth of 10 trials on March 15.

Broadbent drew post 4 and will be ridden by Luis Flores-Garcia.

King Leonardo D, the only Spring Futurity finalist with more than one previous start, has earned $12,600 from two outs, and he broke his maiden with a neck victory in the second trial. A $9,500 yearling buy at last year’s New Mexico-Bred Sale at Ruidoso Downs, the Osbaldo gelding is trained by Juan Meraz for owner Jeanette J. Saenz.

King Leonardo D drew post 6 and will be ridden by Julian Zavala.

Also on Sunday, Jaelys Jewel heads a group of 12 2-year-olds entered in the 300-yard, $50,000 New Mexican Spring Fling Stakes (R).

Owned and trained by Jaime Aldavaz Sr., Jaelys Jewel made her debut with a three-quarter length win in the ninth New Mexican Spring Futurity trial. The homebred Big Daddy Cartel colt drew post 6 and will be ridden by Christian Cardenas.
