MEXICO CITY, MEX–APRIL 24, 2025–Twenty-eight three-year-olds will vie for a chance to return in the $60,000 Derby Garanones in three different trials on Sunday at the Hipodromo de las Americas.
Several heavy hitters are scheduled to run in the derby trials, but two that stand out are last year’s Mexican champion two-year-old gelding Dk Fuego De Danny and Mexican champion two-year-old filly Princesa Bury.
Dk Fuego De Danny, who earned over $100,000 during his freshman campaign, is determined to redeem himself after his last-place finish in the Mexico Derby. He will start in the first trial from post position four with 3-1 early odds.
Trainer Luis Cruz will saddle Dk Fuego De Danny with Emmanuel Cruz aboard. Cuadra San Martin owns the son of leading sire Danny Cartel. Cuadra La Presita bred him out of Bauty Fire by Walk Thru Fire.
Another notable contender in trial one is As Easy Jet Princes. After finishing third in the Mexico Derby on March 30, As Easy Jet Princes is the favorite to win her trial heat with 5-2 odds.
Princesa Bury, starting on 5-2 early odds from trial two, is the overall easy favorite, with over $164,000 in lifetime earnings. Coming off a first-place finish in the Mexico Derby, the daughter of Danny Cartel is looking for her eighth consecutive victory and a spot in the finals to earn her fourth career stakes win.
Bred by Armando Leon, Princesa Bury is out of Princesa Bury Buu by One Dashing Eagle. Cuadra Guillen owns the Rene Gomez-trained filly, and Alejandro Gomez gets the riding call.
Trial three’s morning-line favorite is Dk Torito Cartel, who placed second to Princesa Bury in the Mexico Derby. The three-year-old gelding has earned $57,400 for his owner Cuadra San Martin.
Trainer Luis Cruz conditions Dk Torito Cartel, who drew the outside rail, post position ten, with jockey Emmanuel Cruz in the irons. Cuadra La Presita bred the son of Danny Cartel out of Ms Darlin Reason Sa by Good Reason SA.
Dk Fuego De Danny, Hf Cinnamon Carver, and Dk Torito Cartel hold the top three fastest times at 350 yards on Sunday's card.
