SHELBYVILLE, IN—MAY 14, 2025—On Thursday, May 15, at Horseshoe Indianapolis, twenty-seven Indiana-bred three-year-olds will compete in three trial heats, covering 350 yards, to qualify as one of the ten fastest to the $75,000 Harley Greene Derby.
The first heat on the card is race nine, featuring the morning-line favorite, Beach First. The son of Escondido Beach appears to be well-matured as he makes his three-year-old debut, having completed two impressive workouts.
Owned by Gregg Farris, Beach First placed second in last year’s Leader Of The Class Futurity and fourth in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity [G3], and has earnings of $34,974. Claudio Barraza trains the gelding, starting from post four, with jockey Edgar Diaz in the saddle.
Escondido Gold is also starting in trial one. He has four wins from seven starts and $90,581 in the bank. Last year, the Natasha Perez-trained gelding placed second over Beach First in the Miss Roxie Little Futurity [G3]. Diego Bocanegra will ride the son of Escondido Beach for owner BFD Farms.
The second heat will feature Apollitical Mission competing in race ten. The son of The Transmission won the 2024 Leader of the Class Sale Futurity and placed second in the Miss Roxie Little Juvenile, with lifetime earnings of $61,917.
Phillip R. Harrison owns Apollitical Mission. He is conditioned by Tim Eggleston and will be ridden by Rolando D. Pina from post position two.
Heat three is the final race on the card, featuring Wrs Apollitical Gal. From seven starts, the daughter of Eos A Political Win has finished outside the top three only once, but has yet to break her maiden.
Wrs Apollitical Gal is racing for owners Williams Racing Stables, Inc. She is trained by Natasha Perez, and Diego Villamil Bocanegra will ride her from post five.
Last year’s Gordon Mobley Futurity winner, Zoomin Feature, is starting from the inside post of trial three. The Campos Family Venture homebred gelding has two wins from five starts and the most earnings of all the 27 contenders with $118,785. Claudio Barraza trains the son of Jess Zoomin, and Edgar Diaz will be in the saddle.
The ten fastest qualifiers will compete in the Harley Greene Derby Finals on May 31 for a chance to win the $75,000 prize.
