RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–JUNE 18, 2025–A strong cast of New Mexico-bred fillies and mares will line up Saturday for Race 10 at Ruidoso Downs, where the $50,000 Vista Distaff Stakes will be contested over 350 yards.
Post time is scheduled for 4:54 PM (MDT), and the race promises a showcase of top regional Quarter Horse talent, with the title of “Queen of the New Mexico Bred” on the line.

Leading the field as the 5-2 morning line favorite is the seasoned and consistent Over Da Edge, a 4-year-old mare who enters with both class and earnings on her side. Owned by Miguel Y. and Mauricio Gallegos, she has won five of her 17 career starts, with additional placings that bring her total earnings to $227,776.

She is sired by Eye Am King and out of Da Edge by Separatist, Over Da Edge was bred by MJ Farms and will break from post position eight in pink silks under jockey Jordy S. Muniz. She is trained by Marco A. Flores, who also saddles another top contender in the field.

Emerging as a serious threat is Maka Roon, the 7-2 second choice on the morning line. This 5-year-old mare is also by Eye Am King, with her dam C Roon by Brookstone Bay. Maka Roon has succeeded at this level, owned by Christian A. Dominguez-Olivas and bred by Dirk Jones, tallying five victories and $168,974 in earnings. She was a standout purchase at the 2023 Heritage Place Yearling Sale, where she brought just $10,000—a bargain given her consistent record. Trainer Julian Rey Honesto gives the riding assignment to Jacob Enriquez.

Third on the morning line is the progressive Miss Baby Cartel, a 4-year-old mare entering off a recent allowance victory. Bred by Elsa Sotelo, she is sired by Big Daddy Cartel and out of the mare Double Moon Baby by First Moonflash. Owned by Felix Rodriguez, Miss Baby Cartel is trained by Sergio Holguin—with earnings of $154,009 to her name—and will be ridden by Sergio Becerra Jr.

With a mix of proven stakes performers, emerging talent, and strong pedigrees, the Vista Distaff Stakes offers an exciting test at the 350-yard distance. The race serves as a defining showdown for the best mares in the state, and with seasoned conditioners and accomplished riders in the mix.
