Dk Torito Cartel headlines the $88,000 Subasta Selecta Derby on Sunday at the Hipodoromo de las Americas.

MEXICO CITY, MEX—JUNE 19, 2025—Sunday’s stakes tripleheader at Hipódromo de las Américas concludes with its richest event of the evening—the 35th running of the $88,000 Subasta Selecta Derby—featuring a deep field of top-tier 3-year-olds bred in Mexico.

Headlining the field is Dk Torito Cartel, the 3-1 morning-line favorite, who will break from post eight under jockey Nestor Duran. The son of leading sire Danny Cartel enters with a strong résumé, including over $65,500 in earnings and a consistent 3-4-3 record from 13 starts.

Most recently, he finished second in the Mexico Derby, adding to a productive juvenile season where he won the Mexico Breeders Futurity Consolation and ran second in the Mexican Bred Futurity.

Trainer Ashley Cirilo conditions the gelding for owner Cuadra San Martin. He was bred by Cuadra La Presita and is out of Ms Darlin Reason SA by Good Reason SA.

Another key contender is Stoli The Corona, who is listed at 7-2 on the morning line. The son of Krash Cartel will leave from post seven under jockey J. M. Cisneros.

Trained by Jose Aguilar for owner Rancho San Pedro, Stoli The Corona has earned $22,000 from 15 career starts, with four wins and three second-place finishes. He was a finalist in both the Garanones Derby and the Mexico Derby earlier this year. The colt is out of Minya by Stoli and was bred by Abelardo Gallegos.

Sunday’s race card at Hipódromo de las Américas will spotlight three major stakes races, each offering significant opportunities for juveniles and sophomores on the international stage. Two of the races (6 and 7 on the program)—the John Deere Juvenile Challenge and the Adequan Derby Challenge—will award berths into the Challenge Championships scheduled for October 18 at The Downs at Albuquerque.
