EDMONTON, AB–JULY 31, 2025–This Saturday, August 2, Century Mile will host the eagerly anticipated Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity Trials, carded as races one and two, featuring eleven promising juveniles. Each 2-year-old entrant will sprint 330 yards, aiming to post one of the ten fastest times to advance to the $45,000-added Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity Final on August 16, 2025.
The trials showcase a blend of maiden winners, stakes graduates, and rising local-bred contenders all sired by Alberta Stallion Stakes-eligible stallions as they chase a spot in one of the province’s top futurities for locally bred runners.
The opening trial features Speedy Wonder, who looks to follow up her maiden-breaking performance with a top qualifying effort. The filly impressed with a 1¼-length victory in her last outing, rallying strongly in the final yards and signaling talent still being uncovered.
Sired by Jd Wagon Boss out of Enjoy the Corona by Stel Corona, Speedy Wonder has earned $4,767 in just two starts. She is bred and owned by Janice and Barry Sather, trained by Misael Morena, and will be piloted from the outside post six by Jesus Ambrocio Medina.
In the second heat, all eyes will be on Cervezas Fire, the 4-5 morning line favorite and undefeated filly. She enters off back-to-back wins, having captured both her trial and the Sales Stakes Futurity Finals on June 14, where she showed early speed and strong determination to stay perfect in two starts.
Bred in Alberta by Charles G. Stojan, the filly is by Cerveza Corona out of Getit Hot by Walk Thru Fire. She is owned by Jerry Stojan, trained by William H. Leech, and will be ridden by Ricardo Moreno from post position seven. With $16,916 in earnings and a commanding presence, she’s a leading contender to clock the fastest time of the day.
Looking to turn raw potential into a breakthrough performance is One Tough Cerveza, a consistent gelding who’s hit the board in all three starts but remains a maiden. Despite racing a bit green, he’s shown enough ability to be competitive and could sneak into the top ten with a clean trip.
Also sired by Cerveza Corona, he is out of Toughie by Stel Corona, and was bred by Charles G. Stojan. Janice and Barry Sather own the gelding, with Misael Moreno training. Daniel Tavares will ride from post one on the inside rail.
Only the ten fastest qualifiers from the two heats will punch their tickets to the Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity Finals, where a $45,000-added purse and local prestige will be on the line. The finals, covering the same 330-yard distance, will highlight the best of Alberta’s young stallion-sired stock and serve as a launching pad for future stakes campaigns.
With stakes-tested stars, strong pedigrees, and fresh faces, Saturday's trials promise a fast-paced start to an action-packed afternoon at Century Mile.
