SAM HOUSTON, TX–May 17, 2026 The Thursday evening card at Sam Houston Race Park promises an exciting night of Quarter Horse racing, with three sets of trials headlining the action-packed program. With two trials for the Colors Of Houston Futurity, four for the Sam Houston Oaks, and three for the Sam Houston Derby, the evening will showcase both proven runners and emerging talent, all searching for their chance to shine.

In the Sam Houston Derby Trials, twenty-eight sophomores will compete in three trial heats, each 400 yards. Scheduled in races eight through ten, the three-year-olds will battle for a place among the ten fastest qualifiers returning to the Grade 3, $100,000-added Sam Houston Derby.

The top entrant will compete in the tenth race and final trial heat, as Eagle On a June Bug enters as the 1-1 morning-line favorite. The talented gelding shipped to Remington Park earlier this season for his three-year-old debut in the Grade 2 Eastex Stakes, where things did not go as planned despite staying trouble-free throughout the race. He returned to Sam Houston in an open allowance event and responded with a strong effort, driving late to win by a neck.

The accomplished sophomore has started nine times, with five wins and two runner-up finishes, and has earned $270,456 for owners Sergio Jimenez and Enrique Santollo, who purchased him for just $20,000 at the TQHA Yearling Sale.

The son of Eagles Fly Higher, out of the Blushing Bug mare Sandy June Bug, was bred in Texas by Robert T. Moudy III. Trainer Victor Oviedo will saddle the gelding from post three, with regular rider H. Javier Hernandez aboard.

Still, the Sam Houston Derby Trials remain far from a one-horse showcase. With twenty-eight sophomores lining up for a 400-yard race, the trials offer the ideal stage for another emerging runner to step forward. At this point in the season, many three-year-olds are maturing physically and mentally, and a breakout performance can quickly reshape the entire division. Thursday night could easily belong to a new face ready to seize the spotlight.

The Sam Houston Oaks Trials will also feature a wide-open battle, with thirty-three fillies competing in four trial heats at 400 yards. Scheduled in races four through seven, the fillies will aim to secure one of the ten fastest qualifying spots for the $50,000-added Sam Houston Oaks.

The seventh and final Oaks trial features Political Looker as the 2-1 morning-line favorite. The filly closed out her juvenile campaign with a victory over allowance company and prepared for her sophomore debut with a pair of 220-yard works at Retama Park before shipping to Sam Houston.

Political Looker is by Corona Cartel and out of the Apollitical Jess mare Looks Political. Bred in Utah by McColee Land & Livestock, LLC, she races for The Cowboys, who purchased her for $37,000 at the Heritage Place Sale. Trainer Jose U Lopez will send her from post four, with Leonardo Rodriguez named to ride.

Like the Derby division, the Oaks Trials offer nearly any filly in the field the chance to deliver a career-defining performance. Many of the fillies remain lightly raced and still developing, leaving the division wide open as they chase a qualifying spot. Thursday’s trials could easily produce a new contender ready to announce herself on the final weekend of the meet.

With a full evening of high-action racing on tap, the top qualifiers from both the Grade 3, $100,000-added Sam Houston Derby and the $50,000-added Sam Houston Oaks will return for their respective finals on June 13, closing out the Quarter Horse season at Sam Houston Race Park in dramatic fashion. The preview of the Grade 2, $40,000-added Colors of Houston Futurity is available in the related story.
