Jockey Elbert Minchey Dies May 9

Q-RACING JOURNAL—MAY 11, 2015—Retired jockey Elbert Minchey died on Saturday, May 9, in Boswell, Oklahoma.

Minchey was a leading jockey for decades at tracks around the country, and was the first jockey for the legendary Hall of Fame runner Easy Jet. Minchey’s career began before good jockey records were kept, but since 1970, he rode the earners of more than $1.8 million, with 747 winners from 4,777 starters. In addition to Easy Jet, Minchey rode to stakes victories the likes of champion Byou Bird, as well as Miss Marthas Stuff, Salty Talent, Azure Teen, Easy Mable, Pleasing and Fast Con. As a trainer, he also saddled 50 starters, with four winners.

Elbert married his wife, Carol, on October 18, 1977. They were married until she died in 2012.

He is survived by his daughter, Suzi Farris, and many nieces and nephews and other siblings.
