OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—MARCH 27, 2025—Aram Martinez had never won a race at Remington Park, but he didn’t let that stop him from winning three in one night last week. The top training feat for the week belonged to Trey Wood, conditioning the winner of the Grade 2, $419,735 Oklahoma Futurity.
Those accolades have earned the pair of horsemen the Lip Chip Jockey and Trainer of the Week honors.
One day after his 18th birthday, Sunday, March 23, Martinez won for three different trainers – Raymond Gonzalez, Marla Vargas and Cosme Velasquez. The winning horses were Godz Speed for Gonzalez in the second race, Jess Hips in the fifth for Vargas, and The Durango Lights in the seventh for Velasquez.
Martinez is the son of former Remington Park Quarter Horse rider L. Salvador Martinez, who hasn’t ridden this meet here, but finished 14th in the standings last year at Remington with 10 wins during the season.
Aram, won for the first time in his career at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., Oct. 20, 2024. Overall in his career, he now has had 16 mounts with four wins, two seconds and two thirds for horses’ earnings of $62,604.
His father Sal, who has not ridden this year after winning his last two races at Will Rogers Downs on Nov. 11-12 there, has a lifetime American Quarter Horse Record of 6,035 starts, 773 wins, 771 seconds and 729 thirds for a bankroll of $18,706,565.
Wood, a multiple Grade 1 stakes winning trainer, had Flying Joy 1 ready for the finals of Saturday’s Oklahoma Futurity as the 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred daughter of Flying Cowboy 123 flew to victory with jockey Ricky Ramirez up. The filly was the fastest qualifier from night two of the trials and despite that, she was let go at 6-1 odds in the wagering.
“All the credit for (Flying Joy 1) goes to my dad and my assistants,” Wood said after the race. Dad (Blane Wood) picked her out of the Heritage Place Yearling Sale and broke her.”
Owner David R. Rogers of Graham, Texas, purchased Flying Joy 1 on Blane Wood’s keen eye review, paying only $49,000 for her. She earned $173,786 for winning the Oklahoma Futurity, the oldest futurity in Quarter Horse racing. Flying Joy 1 was victorious in the 84th edition of the race, first contested in 1947.
Trey Wood now has 13 Grade 1 winners in his career, including winning the Heritage Place Futurity at Remington Park in 2012 with BP Cartels Alibi. Among the top horses he has trained are All American Futurity winners Apocalyptical Jess and Whistle Stop Café. Trey trained Apocalyptical Jess to a win in the Grade 1 Ruidoso Quarter Horse Derby and Whistle Stop Café in the Grade 1 All American Oaks (by disqualification). Those two horses were under Blane’s tutelage during their All American Futurity victories.
