2026 Triple Crown Nominations Reach All-Time High at Ruidoso Downs

RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM–MARCH 27, 2025–The number of Quarter Horses nominated for the 2026 Triple Crown Races at Ruidoso Downs Racetrack has soared to an all-time high following the recent first payment deadline in January.

A total of 1,521 quarter horses are now in the running for the prestigious Ruidoso, Rainbow, and All-American Futurity slated for the upcoming 2026 year.

"This surge in nominations is a testament to the industry’s confidence in our racing product," stated General Manager Rick Baugh. "With nearly a ten percent increase in nominations compared to previous year, we are witnessing a promising indicator of a thriving future."

The 2026 figures surpass the 2025 total of 1,391 two-year-olds by a 130 head. This also eclipses the ten-year average by a whopping 206 nominations, indicating a positive trend following an ownership change at Ruidoso Downs during that period.

This dynamic growth sets an exhilarating trajectory for the upcoming 2026 racing season.

Ruidoso Downs Racetrack is set to kick off live horse racing on Friday, May 23, 2025. The season begins with trials for the $1 million Ruidoso Futurity and Derby opening weekend.

“In conjunction with our commitment to an unparalleled racing experience, the Department of Transportation and FEMA are making significant headway in enhancing the infrastructure with the installation of new culverts and an eight-acre retention pond to mitigate potential floodwaters from the Rio Ruidoso,” Baugh said.

"Our preparations are progressing smoothly and we are on schedule to open Memorial Day weekend," Baugh reassures. "We anticipate welcoming horses and trainers into the barn area by mid-April."

Ruidoso Downs continues to reach out to season ticket holders in advance. “We appreciate patience through this process,” Baugh said. “We understand that we have been delayed by our work on the infield and racetrack and we are moving forward.”
