RUIDOSO DOWNS, NM—SEPTEMBER 16, 2025–As King Of The Tide crossed the wire first in the 2025 renewal of the All American Futurity (G1) on Labor Day, the Wood family etched another chapter into the archives of the sport’s richest Quarter Horse race.

For trainer S. Trey Wood, it marked a third-generation ac-complishment—matching the victories of both his father and grandfather in the prestigious Labor Day classic.

The 36-year-old trainer grew up on the property of Lubbock Downs in Lubbock, Texas, as the grandson of Ruidoso Racehorse Hall of Fame trainer Leo Wood, who captured the 1979 All American Futurity with the Dan and Jolene Urschel-owned Pie In The Sky. Trey’s father, G. Blane Wood, added his own victories in the event with Apocalyptical Jess in 2018 and Whistle Stop Cafe in 2020.

“The All American Futurity is about the only race that I still get nervous for leading up to,” said Trey Wood. “King Of The Tide had been doing so good going into Labor Day that the entire team was very confident in the way he would run, and that is really not like us to be so confident. You just never know what can happen in the race or before the race, so you tend not to be overconfident as a trainer.”

When the gates opened for the $3 million All American Futurity (G1), jockey Ricky Ramirez guided King Of The Tide just behind Ruidoso Futurity (G1) winner Political Twist through the early stages of the 440-yard race.

Ramirez later shared in post-race interviews that the win was truly a come-from-behind effort, with King Of The Tide closing strongly to overtake Political Twist in the final strides and secure victory at The Downs at Albuquerque.

“I was standing and watching the race about 150 yards from the finish line,” said Wood. “As the field went past me, I could see that Ricky was sitting really confident aboard King Of The Tide as they flew past. I really didn’t get to see if he had won or not from my vantage point, and when I looked up at the big screen on the tote board I actually thought that we had run second.”

“Everyone started coming over and telling me that we had won, but I’ve heard that before only to be disappointed. So I held back from getting too excited until the numbers were posted. When they finally were, it hit me—we had won the All American.”

Among those in attendance for the 2025 running was Trey’s father, Blane Wood, a two-time All American Futurity-winning trainer himself. He had the privilege of watching his own father, Leo, capture the race in 1979 with Pie In The Sky, and 46 years later, witnessed his son join the family tradition with a victory of his own.

“We are still relishing this big win as a family several weeks after the victory,” said Blane Wood. “Watching Trey get his win in the All American was just surreal, and it has added an even stronger drive in us to come and win it again. If my father Leo was alive to see us accomplish another All American Futurity win in the family, I just know that he would be so proud and grinning from ear-to-ear.”

King Of The Tide pushed his lifetime earnings to $1,589,287 from five career starts with the win in the $3 million All American Futurity (G1). His connections have confirmed that the colt’s cam-paign is not over for the year, as he will compete in trial race nine for the $1 million New Mexico-Bred Futurity (RG2) on September 19, 2025. A berth in the finals would further elevate his stand-ing among the premier two-year-olds of 2025 and add another prestigious title to the Wood stable.

“He’s sound, he’s lightly raced, and he’s doing everything right,” said Trey Wood. “He’s bounced out of the All American feeling great, so we decided to point him toward the million-dollar futurity for New Mexico-breds. We’re looking forward to keeping this momentum going.”

King Of The Tide will will start in trial nine from post seven on Friday for a spot n the $1.2 million estimated New Mexico State Fair Futurity at the Downs at Albuquerque. Ricky Ramirez will be back in the pilot’s seat.
