WEATHERFORD, TEXAS–JANUARY 22, 2026– Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery (ESMS) announced an addition to its team this week via a social media post, welcoming J. Dylan Lutter, DVM, as an Associate Veterinarian and Surgeon at its Weatherford, Texas location.
Founded by Dr. Mike Fox, Dr. Marty Ivey, and Dr. Steve Hurlbert, ESMS traces its roots back to Trinity Meadows Racetrack, where the three veterinarians, then friendly competitors, joined forces to better serve the equine athlete. What began as a supply and billing office in Weatherford has since grown into a state-of-the-art equine medicine and surgery facility, which officially opened its doors in September 2001.
Today, ESMS operates multiple divisions, including its racetrack division, which provides veterinary services at several major racing venues. Those tracks include Lone Star Park, Prairie Meadows, Remington Park, Ruidoso Downs, Sunland Park, Will Rogers Downs, Zia Park, Canterbury Park, Turf Paradise, and Fair Meadows. In addition to its racetrack services, ESMS also operates full-service facilities in Weatherford and Houston, Texas.
According to the practice, ESMS’s vision is to be the premier equine practice in the Southwest while setting the standard for quality veterinary care. Its mission centers on providing exceptional, compassionate care supported by advanced facilities that include critical and neonatal intensive care units, a six-room hospital, a surgery suite with dual induction and recovery stalls, a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, and more than 80 stalls for hospitalized horses. The practice is staffed by more than 20 veterinarians, including three board-certified surgeons and a board-certified internist.
Dr. Lutter joins ESMS following 11 years as a faculty member at the Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he specialized in equine surgery with an emphasis on lameness, sports medicine, and rehabilitation. Raised in South Dakota, Lutter has lifelong experience with ranch horses, cutting horses, Belgian draft horses, and mules.
His professional interests include complex lameness cases and musculoskeletal surgeries. Lutter is a Certified Equine Rehabilitation Practitioner (CERP) and is certified in animal chiropractic through the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. He incorporates rehabilitation and chiropractic care into comprehensive treatment plans and also works with show cattle, sheep, and goats.
ESMS noted that Dr. Lutter is now available to see performance horses at its Weatherford facility, expanding the practice’s surgical and sports-medicine capabilities.
