The longtime assistant to American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame trainer Jack Brooks, Raymond Vargas recently went out on his own and from only 42 starts has trained the earners of $674,432, including Remington Park Futurity (R) winner Mighty B Valiant.

G.R. Carter Jr. is the all-time-everything rider in American Quarter Horse racing. The 10-time AQHA champion jockey is the all-time leader by money, having ridden the earners of more than $65.8 million, and by wins, having gone into the trials with scores aboard 3,663 winners from 23,141 starts. Carter has won the All American Futurity (G1) twice, on Falling In Loveagain in 1998 and on world champion Stolis Winner in 2008. On the first day of trials, Carter won seven of the 14 heats and was aboard four of the five finalists qualified on Thursday afternoon.

You And Me Partners consists of Terry Bell of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Homer “Bud” Hill of Dimmitt, Texas. The partners have raced the earners of more than $1.3 million, including Grade 1 winner Mighty Invictus and Grade 2 winner Crater Lake. Under the partnership name, they have bred the winners of more than 104 races form 620 starts, and earners of more than $1.4 million. Horses they have bred include Crater Lake, winner of the 2005 Remington Park Futurity (G2), Restricted Grade 2 winner Conner Can, and Restricted Grade 3 winner Paintyourownwagon.

Both men are involved in ranching, and Bell says their partnership of more than two decades has been lucky enough to see some success. They’ve had three previous qualifiers to the All American Futurity and in 2000 were partners on the winning Eyesa Special.

Jess Cuervo - Fourth-Fastest Qualifier, Trial 25, :21.218

Jess Cuervo was third in Rainbow Futurity (G1) and fourth in Easy Jet Stakes (RG3). Racing on a sloppy (sealed) track in the 25th of 26 trials, Jess Cuervo and second-place finisher, Denver Pass, were the final qualifiers for the All American Futurity.

Jess Cuervo opened his year at Remington Park, where he won his Remington Park Futurity (R) trial but failed to qualify. He won his Heritage Place Futurity (G1) trial in similar fashion, winning by a head but again failing to qualify. He then ran in the Easy Jet Stakes (RG3), finishing fourth. Pushed by a 15 mph tailwind, Jess Cuervo won his Rainbow trial by 1 1/2 lengths, surging clear and winning as the 2-1 favorite. He finished third in the Rainbow after recovering from a less-than-perfect break.

Terry Bell and Homer Hill bred Jess Cuervo, and the colt’s dam, also a homebred for the partnership, was a Grade 3-placed runner who also produced Kansas Jackpot Futurity (RG3) winner Paintyourownwagon (by PYC Paint Your Wagon, $80,591). Jess Cuervo’s maternal granddam, The Ravin Maniac, set a track record at 400 yards in Albuquerque and finished fourth in the 1996 All American Futurity.

“He is a racehorse,” Bell said of the colt who has been a looker from the start. “They don’t come along very often, but he is one. I’m not saying he’s going to win it. I’m just saying physically, he’s a good horse, and he’s sound, and he’s going to try hard. He doesn’t know what it is to not give it his all.”

Corona Cartel (1994, Holland Ease-Corona Chick by Chicks Beduino) earned $557,142 while compiling a race record of 14-6-3-0, including winning the 1996 Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) and Kindergarten Futurity (G2). From 933 starters in 11 crops raced, Corona Cartel has sired five champions, 112 other stakes winners, 534 other winners and the earners of more than$34.9 million, to rank fifth all-time. With progeny earnings of $1,662,956 to date this year, Corona Cartel currently is the fifth-ranked sire of money earners in 2011. He sired four of the All American Futurity qualifiers.

The Mr Jess Perry mare Jessica Ravin is also a homebred for the partners, earning $23,547 and a placing in the 2004 Bayer Legend New Mexico Challenge (G3). She has also produced Kansas Jackpot Futurity (RG3) winner Paintyourownwagon (by PYC Paint Your Wagon, $80,591). Jess Cuervo’s maternal granddam, The Ravin Maniac, set a track record at 400 yards in Albuquerque and finished fourth in the 1996 All American Futurity; her dam, Rivanne, is a daughter of dam of distinction Trippy Dip (TB), who produced champions Florentine, Calyx and Ive Been Blessed, as well as four other stakes winners.
