First Down Master - After going winless in six races at 2 and coming off his maiden win on May 30 at Ruidoso Downs, First Down Master clocked the third-fastest time to the Derby by finishing second in the first of seven trials behind fastest qualifier Cold Cash 123, behind whom he also finished fifth in last year’s trials to the All American Futurity (G1). The colt was a $50,000 purchase at the Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale and was a $40,000 supplemental nominee to last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1) trials.
First Down Master is one of 14 winners from 15 starters out of a Kansas Derby (G1)-winning earner of $249,430 who is the dam of two-time champion Significant Speed ($517,605, by Duel Fuel), Grade 1 winner Push The Pace ($513,119, by Special Task) and stakes winner Front Running Speed ($73,542, by Vital Sign).
Gus Barakis’ Scarlett Hill Farm Inc., of Weatherford, Texas, has since 1994 bred the winners of 392 races from 2,230 starts, and the earners of more than $4.6 million. They include champion Significant Speed, as well as Grade 1 winners Real Six Time, Executive Looks and Push The Pace.
First Down Dash (1984, Dash For Cash-First Prize Rose by Gallant Jet) was the 1987 world champion and died last year. First Down Dash earned $857,256 and compiled a race record of 15-13-1-0. The all-time leading sire of racing American Quarter Horses with progeny earnings of more than $75.1 million, the stallion has sired 1,667 starters from 21 crops, including 35 champions, 193 other stakes winners and 964 other winners. With progeny earnings of $823,201 to date this year, First Down Dash currently is the 16th-ranked sire of money earners in 2011.
