Giorgino - The ninth-fastest qualifier to the Derby went to post as the favorite in the last of seven trials, broke in, was bumped early but then closed from more than a length off the pace to finish second by neck to seventh-fastest qualifier Royally Sandra.
A $40,000 supplemental nominee to last year’s Rainbow Futurity (G1), Giorgino at 2 won the Sunland Park Winter Futurity (G2), TQHA Sires’ Cup Futurity (RG2) at Sam Houston Race Park and John Deere Delta Downs Juvenile Challenge (G3), and also ran in the finals of the Texas Classic Futurity (G1) won by Rainbow Derby second-fastest qualifier Bodacious Dash and in Make Mine Zoom’s Longhorn Futurity (G2).
In his most recent stakes appearance, he finished fourth in the June 11 Ruidoso Derby (G1) won by Rainbow Derby eighth-fastest qualifier Llano Teller.
Bred and owned by Jorge Haddad, Giorgino is one of two stakes winners out of a stakes-placed earner of $202,480 and is a half brother to the Grade 1-winning Ragazzo ($559,500, by Shazoom).
Trained by John Stinebaugh, who sent out champion Double Down Special to win last year’s Ruidoso Derby and All American Derby (G1), Giorgino was ridden in the trials by champion jockey Jacky Martin, a five-time winner of the Rainbow Derby.
Apollo (TB) (1988, Falstaff-Tumble Along by Tumble Wind) entered stud in 1995 and from 13 crops raced has sired 195 winners and the earners more than $7.2 million from 357 starters, including two champions and 22 other stakes winners. With progeny earnings of $304,665 to date this year, Apollo currently is the 49th-ranked sire of money earners in 2011.
