Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas are cousins who campaigned former track record holder and 2007 Los Alamitos Winter Derby (G1) winner A Stoli Mate. Avila and Cuevas also raced Kool Cowboy, the runner-up in last year’s Kindergarten Futurity (G1), plus 2005 Kindergarten Futurity fourth-place finisher Eye Jess Cant Wait and this year’s Ed Burke Million Futurity finalist (G1) A Country Boy Can. Avila lives in Long Beach, California, and Cuevas in Fresno, and both own transportation businesses.

Last To Fire - Jesus Avila and Jesus Cuevas’ Last To Fire blew away his trial field while posting the :19.724 fastest qualifying time for the Los Alamitos Two Million. He won the 400-yard race by 3 lengths over Eye For FDD and third-place finisher First Outburst, who was fourth in the Golden State Million Futurity (G1).

Last To Fire was bred by legendary horseman Spencer L. Childers who has bred and raced American Quarter Horses for 50 years, beginning with Black Easter Bunny, the champion mare he purchased as a gift for his wife, Florence. Among the many top horses he bred is world champion Be A Bono ($1,313,347) and champions Uncas ($398,504), Jet View ($328,627) and Black Sable ($271,592). Childers was inducted into the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame in 2002.

His sire Walk Thru Fire was a Grade 1-qualifier during his racing career but is making his mark in the history books as a sire. A product of the magical First Down Dash-Beduino (TB) cross, he is a son of all-time leading sire First Down Dash out of the Beduino (TB) mare Sweet Beduino.

From his first crop to race, he got champion Higher Fire ($1,314,742) and Grade 1 winner Gold Nugget Rd ($122,543). From seven crops to race, he has 208 winners and 38 stakes winners from 322 starters. His get have earned more than $11.1 million, and he is also the sire of champion Pink Boots RM.

Walk Thru Fire is this year’s leading sire by money earned, with $3.4 million. The 14-year-old stallion is owned by Dr. Ed Allred and Mike Abraham and stands at Dr. Steve and Jo Burns' Burns Ranch at Menifee, California.

His dam, Last Shall Be First was bred and campaigned by Spencer Childers, and she earned $168,302 while winning five of 17 starts. They included wins in the 2002 Governor’s Cup Derby (RG1) and Dash For Speed Handicap. She was also second in the Governor’s Cup Futurity (RG1) and third in the Golden State Derby (G1). She is a fifth generation Childers-bred on the distaff side from the good mare Hop Skip And Jump, and from seven starters she has six winners, including stakes winners Jazz Be First (by Bono Jazz, $126,273) and Last To Check Him (by Check Him Out, $19,485). Last To Check Him is also in the Los Alamitos Two Million as the seventh-fastest qualifier.
