A top-10 all-time leading trainer, Michael W. “Mike” Joiner has conditioned the earners of more than $18.1 million, including Thunderball B’s sire, champion FDD Dynasty, and FDD Dynasty’s champion daughter Kates Dynasty. Joiner went into the trials having sent out the winners of 611 races from 3,640 starters. On the first day of trials, Joiner also sent out G.R. Carter to win the 10th trial aboard qualifier Tempting Destiny. With qualifiers Thunderball B and Tempting Destiny in this year’s All American Futurity, Joiner works hand in hand with his son Cody, who also is one of the sport’s leading trainers and has conditioned the earners of more than $2.17 million.

G.R. Carter Jr. is the all-time-everything rider in American Quarter Horse racing. The 10-time AQHA champion jockey is the all-time leader by money, having ridden the earners of more than $65.8 million, and by wins, having gone into the trials with scores aboard 3,663 winners from 23,141 starts. Carter has won the All American Futurity (G1) twice, on Falling In Loveagain in 1998 and on world champion Stolis Winner in 2008. On the first day of trials, Carter won seven of the 14 heats and was aboard four of the five finalists qualified on Thursday afternoon.

Champion Kates Dynasty won the ninth trial with the second-fastest time of :21.261. She won her trial by a half-length as the 4-5 favorite.

“Kates Dynasty just guts it out,” Carter said. “She’s not very big, but she is all try.”

The 2013 champion 2-year-old filly, Kates Dynasty closed her freshman season with a 1 1/2-length win in the $1 million Texas Classic Futurity (G1).

Kates Dynasty in the trials was winning her first of four races this season. She came into the trials off a sixth in $1,049,000 Rainbow Derby (G1) on July 19.

Kates Dynasty is the first champion and one of 168 winners sired by FDD Dynasty, a Grade 1 winner who earned $1,173,001 on the track and in 2006-07 was the champion 2-year-old colt and champion 3-year-old colt. Trained by Mike Joiner, FDD Dynasty won the Grade 1 Ed Burke Million Futurity and Go Man Go Handicap, and scored in the Governor’s Cup Derby (RG2). He also was second in the Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity (G1), and third in the Grade 1 Golden State Million Futurity and Champion Of Champions. By world champion and all-time leading sire First Down Dash, FDD Dynasty is out of the Grade 1-winning Tolltac mare Dinastia Toll BRZ. FDD Dynasty has sired 27 stakes winners and the earners of more than $6.96 million.

The Vital Sign mare Jennifer Kate is one of 10 winners from 11 starters out of Kipty Kate ($6,727), a winning daughter of Kiptydoo (TB). Kipty Kate is one of five starters, each a winner, out of the winning Vikingson (TB) mare Plos ($45,309), who is out of the winning Jet Deck mare Passum Queen and is a full sister to Wasau ($58,134), who won stakes in Montana, Washington and Alberta. Kipty Kate produced the earners of $172,113, including stakes winners Runaway Kate ($29,011, by Runaway Winner) and 2002 broodmare of the year Illusive Princess ($27,283, by Illusivo).

Jennifer Kate is a stakes-placed sprinter who bankrolled more than both of her stakes-winning half-sisters combined. An earner of $65,580, the mare won four of 16 races, finished second to Gol in the 1998 Retama Park Futurity (G1) and was third in the following year’s Manor Downs Derby (G2). Jennifer Kate has produced six winners and the earners of $762,404 from eight starters.

Jennifer Kate’s first stakes winner was Texas Sixes, who earned $90,244, won the 2005 Ruidoso Juvenile Invitational Stakes (RG3) and ran in champion Leading Spirit’s Rainbow Futurity (G1). Texas Sixes is by the Windham-bred Streakin Six stallion Streakin Sixes ($77,765) and is out of Windham’s champion Beduino (TB) mare Indigo Illusion. Streakin Sixes in Grade 1 races lit the board in the 1998 Heritage Place Futurity and the ’99 Texas Classic Derby, and at stud has sired champion Miss Kips Streakin ($335,288), 15 other stakes winners and the earners of more than $4.74 million.

Jennifer Kate’s second stakes winner is Texas Icon, an earner of $111,105 by Corona Cartel. Texas Icon won the Q-Racing Stakes on Challenge Championship night at Fair Grounds in 2010 and finished second to Capo De Capi in the 2009 Heritage Place Derby (G2). The stallion’s first foals will be yearlings in 2015.

Jerry Windham is a former president of the American Quarter Horse Association who raises racehorses on his ranch at Snook, Texas, just west of College Station, and beef cattle on his ranch at Hamilton. He has bred 960 American Quarter Horses since 1977, including champions Kate Dynasty, two other champions, 59 other stakes winners, 389 other winners and the earners of more than $17.9 million from 664 starters. Windham’s homebred Jess Zoomin gelding J Bar also qualified to the All American Derby by winning the fourth trial.
