Five Bar Cartel was offered in the 2012 Los Alamitos Equine Sale as a yearling, but was repurchased at $100,000. Jorge Carmona’s San Gregorio Racing Stables Inc. of Mira Loma, California, acquired the horse in February of 2013. The stable in its own name has raced horses since 2010, with 50 wins from 386 starts and more than $1.2 million in earnings. San Gregorio is a co-owner of 2012 world champion One Dashing Eagle, who won the 2012 All American Futurity (G1) during his championship season. |

Five Bar Cartel was last year’s champion 2-year-old colt, and returned to the races in the All American Derby trials. The colt last year won five of seven starts, including the Ed Burke Million Futurity (G1), and earned $654,368. He was also a finalist in the Grade 1 Golden State Million and Los Alamitos Two Million futurities.
Five Bar Cartel’s sire Corona Cartel is the leading living sire with more than $45.5 million in progeny earnings, including world champion Blues Girl Too and champions Carters Cartel, Teller Cartel, Time For A Cigar and Flying Fig.
Dam Five Bar Molly, a daughter of Dash Ta Fame, was a Grade 1 winner in her racing career with earnings of $187,109. She is also the dam of stakes winner and Grade 1-runner Fly Bar Special (by Strawfly Special, $110,787), Grade 1 finalist Mollys Cartel (by Corona Cartel, $150,163) and Grade 1-placed Freedom Choice (by A Regal Choice, $281,423). Her name and the name of her champion son are nods to the Barker family of Utah, who bred her in the name of their Five Barkers Inc.
Esmeralda Flores of Sun City, California, since 2005 has bred 30 winners from 172 starts and the earners of more than $1.3 million. In addition to champion Five Bar Cartel, she also bred stakes winner Fly Bar Special. She also owned Los Alamitos Million Futurity (G1) winner A Regal Choice.
