Cowboy On The Fly Gets The Upset For First Stakes Victory In The Speedhorse P&A Futurity [G1]

TULSA, OK–JULY 20, 2024–Cowboy On The Fly gets up front for the win by 1/2 a length over post-time favorite Vesper Martini in the $78,529 Speedhorse Paint and Appaloosa Futurity [G1] at Fair Meadows in Tulsa on Saturday.

After clocking the second fastest time in the trials, jockey Gonzalo Gutierrez returns for the mount aboard Cowboy On The Fly in the 350-yard finals. The duo clocked an 86 speed index in :18.028 seconds, and the upset paid $13.60 to win on 5/1 odds.

The fastest qualifier from the trials, Vesper Martini, piloted by Roman Cruz, trailed Cowboy On The Fly to the wire for an all-out second. El Gran Martino, with Mario Delgado in the irons, pulled into third just behind by a neck.

Kasey Willis saddled Cowboy On The Fly for owner/breeder Russel Trull. The son of leading second-year-sire Flying Cowboy 123 improved his record to three wins and two thirds from six starts. The Speedhorse P&A Futurity was his first stakes victory, and the $29,841 winner's share boosted his total earnings to $59,033. He placed fourth in Oklahoma P&A Juvenile at Remington Park.

Cowboy On The Fly was bred in Oklahoma out of the Lota PYC mare I Like It Alota.

Three-time winner Vesper Martini also placed second in the Speedhorse Graham P&A Futurity Park and fifth in the Oklahoma P&A Futurity at Remington. The $11,000 Heritage Place Winter Mixed Sale graduatehas won $69,559 for owner 918 Bloodstock.

El Gran Martino broke his maiden in his first start of six but has yet to win again, earning $21,325 for owner Jimmy Maddux. He was a Victoria Ennis Memorial [G2] finalist at Remington Park.

Vesper Martini and El Gran Martino are full siblings sired by leading sire of APHA winners Painted Turnpike. Trained by Dee Keener, they were bred by J Garvan Kelly and Lloyd Yother in Oklahoma out of Martinis N Bikinis by Red Storm Cat.

Pfr Road Rage, Baileys N Blood, Knuckle Buster, Og Nikki Sixx, Zt Rocky, Readi To Wire and Captain Fancy complete the order of finish.
