Relentless Rocket Blasts To Fastest Time In Northland Futurity Trials

SHAKOPEE, MN—JULY 24, 2024—Relentless Rocket raced to his second consecutive win and the fastest qualifying time for the Northlands Futurity on Wednesday night at Canterbury Park.

The 10 fastest qualifiers from three trial races contested will return to Canterbury Park on Thursday, August 15, to vie for the winner's share of an $80,400 purse going a distance of 350 yards.

Relentless Rocket bumped at the break, then drifted under jockey Ramiro Garcia while racing to a two-length winning margin in :17.873 seconds, an 89 speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.

Leading trainer Jason Olmstead saddled the South Dakota homebred for owners Tom and Bill Maher. Tom bred the bay colt from the Corona Cartel mare Mai Corona. Relentless Rock made two starts at Remington Park before breaking his maiden on July 4 at Canterbury. He has earned $15,860.

In the closing trial, Ramiro was back in the saddle to guide Curlie D to a 2-1/2 length victory. The son of leading first-crop sire Uncle D posted the second fastest clocking of 17.965 seconds, an 87-speed index with a 5 mph crosswind.

Also trained by Olmstead, the Oklahoma-bred filly races for owner-breeder Cavenaugh Quarter Horses LLC. It was the first win in four starts for the brown filly from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Veuve Clicquot. She has earned $13,813 in four starts.

In the second trial, Jockey Armando Alvidrez rode Southurn Eagle to a 1-1/4 length win for the Olmstead barn. The One Fabulous Eagle gelding clocked the third fastest time of 18.035, an 85-speed index with a 5 mph tailwind.

Owner-breeder Brenda Reiswig bred Southurn Eagle in Oklahoma from the Corona Cartel mare Party Down South. A two-time winner from three starts, the gelding broke his maiden at Canterbury on July 4.

Olmstead led all trainers, winning all three trials and qualifying five finalists. Trainer Haley Hobbs qualified three to the futurity final.

Hes Relentless, and One Fabulous Eagle got two qualifiers apiece.
