ALBUQUERQUE, NM–OCTOBER 20, 2024–Fastest qualifier Electrifying Cowboy returned as the post-time favorite on Sunday with a dominating four-length victory in the $386,353 Grade 3 La Fiesta Quarter Horse Futurity at The Downs in Albuquerque.
Under jockey Luis Flores-Garcia, Electrifying Cowboy quickly cleared the field to complete the 400 yards in 19.605 seconds, an 89-speed index into a 30 mph headwind.
Trainer Ramon Mendoza saddled the son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 to the fourth win in seven career starts for owners Tungsten Racing Partnership and Ronald Sugamosto. The $193,177 winner's share of La Fiesta more than tripled the 2-year-old colt's earnings to $264,136,
A finalist in the Ruidoso Derby(G1) and the West Texas Futurity(G1), Paragon Farms bred Electrifying Cowboy in Texas from the Corona Cartel mare Corona Carmelita.
Runner-up Apollitical Iceman, under jockey Luis Martinez, earned $77,271 for finishing second. David Gomez-Barraza trains the son of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner Ranco La Aventura LLC. Dunn Ranch bred the gray gelding in Oklahoma from the Tres Seis mare Tres Sea. Apollitical Iceman doubled his earnings to $153,542.
Karmalites was moved from fourth to third after Cowboys N Fairytales' number was taken down for interference at the start. The graded stakes winning daughter of second-crop sire The Marfa Light earned $43,642 for the effort.
Trainer David Gomez-Barraza named jockey Emilo Tapia to ride the two-time stakes winner for owner Fabian Muniz Porras. Paris Wixon bred the $276,524 earner in Oklahoma from the Corona Cartel mare Cartel Karma.
Cowboys N Fairytales was moved to fourth, followed by Koko Nut Corona, Dash Of Candy, Zoomin On Home, Renegading, Cali Ann Te, and Ruse Jumpn completed the field.
