ALBUQUERQUE, NM–OCTOBER 26, 2024–Noreason Fordiamonds made a late bid at the wire for a slight upset in the $40,000 Sandia Stakes at the Downs at Albuquerque on Saturday.
Kj Henry B, with Noe Garcia Jr in the irons, led around the turn, but Noreason Fordiamonds and Christian Cardenas charged in clear at the wire for the win by 1 1/4 lengths. The seven-year-old gelding clocked an 85-speed index in the 870-yard stakes. The 12-1 longshot paid $26.80 to win on a $2.00 wager.
The post-time favorite Bp Desert Streak, piloted by James Flores, placed third a length behind Kj Henry B. Lewie Gotta Go, ridden by Alejandro Medellin, placed fourth, and Impressive Brook, with Jacquelyn Bobroff up, closed the order of finish.
The Sandia Stakes is Noreason Fordiamonds' first victory this season from four starts. The $24,000 payday boosted his lifetime earnings to over $100,000. The son of Rances Reason has five career wins from 35 starts and was a finalist in the NM Classic 870 Championship Stakes [G3] (twice), Starr Western Wear Stakes, Sandia Stakes, and Albuquerque Juvenile Stakes earlier in his career.
Gene Garcia owns Noreason Fordiamonds in partnership with Reyes Garcia. Gene and Misty Garcia bred him in New Mexico out of Cartier N Capris by Atilla's Storm (TB).
Breeders John and Kathy Lee own runner-up Kj Henry B in partnership with Ruben Mares. Wes Giles trains the Arizona-bred three-year-old out of Xquizit by Ivory James. The son of Valiant Hero has two wins from nine starts and $33,746 in lifetime earnings.
Charles and Irma Lyles bred third-place finisher Bp Desert Streak in Louisiana from the Wall Streak mare Miss Desert Streak. The son of Bp Wagon Train has a record of 5-3-2 from 21 starts with $132,958 in the bank for owners Robert, Barbara and Fabian Dimas. Robert Dimas conditions the five-year-old gelding.
