CLAREMORE, OK–NOVEMBER 12, 2024–Bumped at the start, Catchn Southern Rays put in a determined run under jockey Cristian Esqueda to win the $536,151 Black Gold Fillies Futurity Championship(RG3) at 10-1 odds by half-a-length on Tuesday at Will Rogers Downs.
Catchn Southern Rays scored her third career win in eight starts while completing the 400 yards in 19.648 seconds, a 102-speed index with a 20 mph tailwind. Trainer Stacy Charette-Hill saddled the Oklahoma-bred daughter of leading sire Apollitical Jess for owner-breeder Leann Burns.
Bred from the Pyc Paint Your Wagon mare Mary Paintyourwagon, Catchn Southern Rays was second in the Heritage Place Juvenile and a finalist in the Valley Junction Futurity(G3). The $214,461 Black Gold winners' purse boosted her bankroll to $265,621.
Red Iron, under jockey Roman Cruz, dueled early and drifted out to earn $91,146 for finishing second. Deen Keener saddled the royally bred daughter of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123 for owner Curt Crossland. Bred by AQHA Champion breeder Bobby D. Cox, from the First Down Dash mare First To Celebrate, Red Iron was second in the John Deere Will Rogers Juvenile Challenge and fourth in the Speedhorse Futurity(G3) earlier this year. He has earned $144,972 in eight starts.
A neck back Edelyns Pyc was out-finished under jockey Ali Rivera to earn $58,977 for third. Felesha Gold trains the Oklahoma homebred daughter of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon for owner-breeder Cuadra JM LLC. A finalist in the Dash For Cash Juvenile last month, Edelyns Pyc has banked $72,249 in eight starts. She is out of Kylee Joy by First Moonflash.
Curlie D, Shaken Goin On, Candy Flood, Apollitical Muse, Sheza Fearless Eagle, Too Sexy By Far, and Flying Bandida completed the field.
