Gbh Fiscal Toni Dominates $100,000 RG3 Louisiana Champions Day Derby

OPELOUSAS, LA–DECEMBER 21, 2024Gbh Fiscal Toni drifted out and brushed at the start, then drew clear of the field to win the restricted Grade 3 $100,000 Louisiana Champions Day Derby by 1-3/4 lengths on Saturday night at Evangeline Downs.

Under jockey Cesar Segura, Gbh Fiscal Toni covered the 400-yard distance as the post-time favorite in 19.977 seconds, equaling an 88-speed index with a 6 mph tailwind.

The 3-year-old son of The Fiscal Cliff got his fourth career win and first stakes victory in 14 starts.  The $45,000 Champions Day Derby winner's purse brings Gbh Fiscal Toni's earnings to nearly $100,000.

Jose Sanchez trains the gelding out of Streakin For Toni by Streakin La Jolla for owners Marco Ramirez, Gary Hartstack, and John Bond. Hartstack is also the breeder.

Lrh Jess Shake It Up was a game second while drifting out under jockey Ricardo Hernandez, Jr. to earn $17,000 for second. Francisco Campos Sr. conditions the One Sweet Jess filly for owner Carlos Campos. Jetty and Donald Lemaire bred Lrh Jess Shake It Up from the Oak Tree Special mare Lrh Heartofanoak.  The winner of the $48,750 EVD Maiden Graduation (not black-type) in her last start on November 2, has earned $64,755.

Bumped at the start, Alcala Perry, under jockey Jorge Garcia, surged late to finish a half-length back in third. Luis Martinez trains the Paint Me Perry filly for owner Ma Santa Torres. Bred by Steve Duhon, from the No Secrets Here mare Itsallaboutattitude, Alcala Perry earned $10,000 for the effort.
