PHOENIX, AZ–JANUARY 27, 2025–Fourth fastest qualifier from the trials, Grand Diamond D, wins the $33,000 Turf Paradise Maiden Stakes on Monday in a slight upset.
Jockey Oscar Andrade piloted Grand Diamond D to victory in 15.518 seconds, clocking a 99 speed index. The duo ran against a five mph crosswind, and the effort paid $12.40 to win on 5-1 odds.
Grand Diamond D crossed the wire one length ahead of Set The Edge, ridden by Luis Valenzuela, who placed second. With Mark Jasso in the irons, Cringle came in third by a neck.
Grand Diamond D broke his maiden after six career starts and the $19,470 winner's share of the purse boosted his lifetime earnings to $22,195. Trainer Diego Cervantes saddled the son of leading sire Uncle D for owner Jose Aguilar Mendoza, who purchased him for $15,000 in the 2023 Heritage Place Yearling Sale.
Mercy Hinklin Horse Farm, LLC bred Grand Diamond D in Texas. The three-year-old gelding is the first foal out of the FDD Going Grand mare Sels Grand Diamond. He is from a family of graded stakes winners, including Diamond Tres Seis, Meddlin Dash, Meddlin IN Money, and He Is The Risingstar, etc.
Runner-up Set The Edge has yet to break his maiden from 12 starts and has $22,880 in the bank. The son of leading sire Kvn Corona has earned $16,610 for owner-trainer Alex Torres-Casas.
McCollee Land & Livestock LLC bred Set The Edge in Utah. The $60,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate is out of Famous Little Reba by One Famous Eagle.
Trainer Diego Cervantes also conditioned third-place finisher Cringle for owner Jose Aguilar Mendoza, who purchased him for $20,000 in the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Royal Vista Ranch bred three-year-old son of One Fabulous Eagle in Texas out of Craizin by Corona Cartel.
Raven Jl, Marys Dynasty, Cuz Cartel, Jd Dash Jr, Ms Kpax, Kvn Negro To Blanco and Candy Dragon complete the order of finish.
