EDMONTON, ALB–MAY 10, 2025–The first race of the day, the $15,821 (US) Old Timers Classic Stakes, at Century Mile produced an unexpected victory and set a new track record. Fired won his first race of the season with odds of 9-1, defeating Miss Fancy Nancy and stablemate Flight Club, who won the Old Timers Classic in 2022 and 2024.
Fired, piloted by Alexander Marti, left the gates in four but kicked it into high gear at the final stretch for the win by a nose. The son of Fly Thru The Fire clocked a 104 speed index in 15.392 seconds, which broke Flight Club’s 15.406 track record set in 2022. The 300-yard victory paid 21.40 for the upset.
Tonight’s victory marks the third stakes win for Fired and improves his record to 5-6-1 from 14 starts. Trained by William Leech, the $8,213 winner’s share of the purse boosts his lifetime earnings to $65,959.
Among his top wins, Fired took home the trophy in last year’s All Canadian Derby and the Maiden Express Finals at Century Mile.
Owner Jerry Stojan purchased Fired for $18,000 in the Los Alamitos Equine Sale. Dr. Steve Burns, DVM bred the four-year-old gelding in California out of Ruths Chris by Separatist.
Miss Fancy Nancy, ridden by Jesus Ambrocio Medina, rallied up to the wire but just missed by a nose in the photo finish. The daughter of Big Lew has lit the board 11 of 16 starts with $68,013 in earnings.
Misael Moreno trains the four-year-old stakes-winning filly for owners/breeders Barry and Janice Sather. They bred Miss Fancy Nancy in Alberta out of the Favorite Cartel mare Singles Cruise.
William Leech also saddled Flight Club for Stojan, who purchased the 14-time stakes-winning veteran for $19,000 in the 2019 Los Alamitos Equine Sale. The seven-year-old gelding has a record of 16-3-3 from 26 starts and $194,681 in the bank.
Dr. Steve Burns, DVM, bred Flight Club in California out of the Separatist mare Separate Flight.
Pretty Sweet Jess, Double Cruise, Krash On Okey, Willie Lump Lump, and She Wears The Pantz round out the order of finish.
Editor's note: A photo of this race will be posted with this article as soon as it is available from the track photographer.
