Famous Speedy One Prevails in $11,500 Chippewa Downs Open QH Derby

BELCOURT, ND–JUNE 22, 2025–In wet and windy conditions Sunday at Chippewa Downs, Famous Speedy One broke sharply and never relinquished the lead, powering to a commanding victory in the $11,500 Chippewa Downs Open QH Derby.

Ridden by Dakota Wood, the 3-year-old brown gelding covered the 350-yard distance in 17.733 seconds, earning a Speed Index of 98 on a fast track despite a 20-mph crosswind and rainy 59-degree weather.

Owned by Wilson Racing Stables and trained by Cole Wilson, Famous Speedy One added $5,750 to his earnings with the win. The North Dakota-bred son of Famous Painted One, out of Little Free Speed by Free Company, was bred by Darrel Smith and Noreen Cavanaugh and showed grit and determination down the stretch to win by 1¾ lengths.

A stakes winner of the NDQHRA Northern Plains Futurity last season, he has won four of 11 starts and earned $36,752.

Finishing second was Shes Wheelie Smokin, who ran a game race under Larren Delorme for owner Steve Leonard and trainer Jeff Charbonneau. The gray filly, also by Famous Painted One, is out of Your Wagons a Winner by Paintyourownwagon and was bred in North Dakota by Darrel H. Smith. She earned $2,300 for her effort to bring her earnings total to $9,174.

Close behind in third was her stablemate Andres Jode, a sorrel gelding by Kiss Me Jody, out of Andres Okey Dokey by Dashing Jess Perry, bred by Rodney J. Smith. Ridden by Carlos Banda, he finished 3/4 length behind the runner-up in a time, earning a purse share of $1,150.

Famous Speedy One returned $5.80 to win, $2.20 to place, and $2.10 to show. Shes Wheelie Smokin paid $2.20 to place and $2.20 to show, while Andres Jode returned $2.20 to show..

One Sweet Ferarri finished fourth, followed by Her Choice Is Cash in fifth and Ac Giddyupgo in sixth. Must Be Magic and Shesa Okeydokey Jess was scratched.
