GREAT FALLS, MT—JULY 12, 2025—Two competitive 300-yard trials were contested today at Great Falls Turf Club for the $20,000-added Charles M. Russell Futurity, with eight 2-year-old Quarter Horses now qualified to return for the final on Sunday, July 27.
Fastest overall qualifier honors went to Ca Mental Cartel, a gray filly by Mental Error out of Lil Baby Eagle by One Famous Eagle. Owned by Lana Matt and bred in Florida by Lou Weaver, the promising filly broke sharply and edged clear midway under jockey Jarred Journet to post a winning time of :15.916.
Making her career debut in the today's second trial, Ca Mental Cartel is trained by Tryston C. Matt and will look to build on her impressive trial score when she returns for the final. She earned $1,75 for the effort.
The second-fastest qualifier emerged from the first of two trials, where Exagorazo, a Texas-bred gelding by Tarzanito out of Waveing Of The Tee by Wave Carver, finished best on the outside to win by a neck.
Raced by Wookalar Outfitters and Jami Theurer, Exagorazo is trained by Josh Theurer and was guided by Richard Birdrattler to stop the clock in 15.936 while breaking his maiden in his career debut.
Bred by Carolyn Asmussen, Exagorazo was a $14,000 purchase at the 2024 Heritage Place Yearling Sale and will return as a top contender for the July 27 finald. He also earned $1,375.
Rounding out the top three qualifiers was Heartland Xpress, who finished a close second to Ca Mental Cartel in the second trial with a time of 15.938. The Missouri-bred filly by world champion sire Freighttrain B out of Bye Bye Birdy by Hawkinson races for Brant Barley and is trained by Tyler Gibbs.
Jockey Fernando Manuel Gamez was aboard for the quick effort, with Barbara A. Barley credited as the breeder. Two races back, Heartland Xpress was second in the Bucking Horse Sale Futurity at Miles City and has earned $18.034 in four starts.
