First Prize Cruise Rallies To Win Alberta-Bred Maturity

EDMONTON, ALB—SEPTEMBER 4, 2020--First Prize Cruise, under jockey Martin Ortiz, rallied then edged away late to defeat Atomic Blondie by half-a-length in the $7,176(US) Alberta-Bred Maturity (not black type) Friday evening at Century Mile Racecourse.

The son of multiple stakes sire First Prize Doc completed the 300 yards in :15.936 seconds, into a 15 mph headwind, to pick up the winner's purse valued at $3,755(US).

Owned-and-trained by Tom Kenway, First Prize Cruise has compiled a (22) 6-4-7 record and banked $45,976. The Alberta homebred for Kenway is out of Eye Cruise by Eye Take Time.

Multiple stakes-placed Atomic Blondie earned $1,842(US) for finishing second. Owned-and-trained by Deanne Davies, the daughter of Birdzilla (TB) was ridden by jockey D.I. Benitez. Sazwan Speed Horses bred the $32,325 earner form the Dashing Val mare Sables Val.

Multiple stakes winner Ima Runnin First broke alertly but flattened to finish half-a-length back for owner, trainer-and-breeder Wesley Oulton. The 7-year-old son of leading Canadian sire First Timber increased his earnings total to $40,689. Jose Rocha had the riding call on the gelding out of Ima Jess A Streaker by Streakin La Jolla.

Canadian Timber, Streaken Timber and Papas Coleen completed the field.

First and third-place finishers First Prize Cruise and Ima Runnin First are sired by half-brothers, First Prize Doc and First Timber. Both stallions are sons of the First Down Dash mare First Prize Dash, a sister to all-time leading sire First Down Dash.

First Prize Doc is a stakes winning son of leading sire Pyc Paint Your Wagon. First Timber, a finalist in the Grade 1 All American Derby, is by world champion Oak Tree Special.
