HOBBS, NM—OCTOBER 31, 2021—With a strong rally under jockey Manuel Gutierrez, Don Chuy C got up at the wire to defeat Colby James by a neck in the $100,000 Namehimastreaker New Mexico Classic Quarter Horse Championship(RG1) Sunday afternoon at Zia Park.
Don Chuy C completed the 440 yards in :21.328 seconds, with a 17 mph tailwind, to earn a 107 speed index. It was the fourth career win 19 starts for the son of leading sire First Moonflash. The $60,000 winner's purse pushed the brown colt's earnings total to $200,990.
Jamie Aldavaz, Sr. saddled the winner for owner Jesus Carrasco. Bred by Mike Abraham, from the Spit Curl Jess mare Jess Say Bye Bye, Don Chuy C entered the race off a third-place finish in the Downs at Albuquerque Fall Championship(G1) to Valiant Tiberias and champion Danjer in his last start September 19.
Graded stakes winner Colby James just missed under jockey Mario Delgado to finish second. Trainer James J. Gonzales, II conditions the 4-year-old son of multiple stake sire Jesse James Jr for owner Rex Wells. The $20,000 second-place payday boosted the sorrel gelding's earnings mark to $425,208. MJ Farms bred Colby James from the Blushing Bug mare Sandy June Bug.
Marcus Medallion, an 8-year-old son of Jesse James Jr, finished one-length back to earn $10,000 for third. Adrian Ramos had the riding call for owner-trainer Jaime Aldavaz, Sr. Carl Bailey bred the $382,803 earner from the Mr Houston mare Houstons Medallion.
Coming off a second-place effort in the Grade 1 Bank of Challenge Championship at The Downs one-week ago, No Mires A La Luna finished fourth. Diamond And A Half, Flashing Moolah, Burn One Down For Me, Your Easy Jess, Effortless Candy Cat and Freedom Flash completed the field.
