Jettin Cartel Impressive In Louisiana Downs Season Opener

BOSSIER CITY, LA—JANUARY 10, 2022—Louisiana Downs kicked off their 46-day 2022 Quarter Horse Meet today (Monday) with a 7 race card headed by Race 6, a 220 yard $15,000 Feature Allowance for Louisiana-Bred 3-year-olds & up.

Jettin Cartel, a 4-year-old son of multiple grade 1 sire Carters Cartel, was an impressive winner in the year's first Allowance race under jockey David Alvarez. Conditioned by trainer Hector Alcala, Jettin Cartel defeated post-time favorite On Point by three-quarter while clocking the 220 yards in the :11.730 seconds, a 105 speed index into a 8 mph crosswind.

It was the fifth career win in 13 starts for the Rogelio Marquez, Jr. owned gelding. Fourth in the Louisiana Champions Day Derby Stakes (RG3) in his last start, Jettin Cartel earned $9,000 for today's effort and has banked $67,298.

Steve Duhon bred the gray gelding from the Fishers Dash mare Fishers Jetsetter.

Runner-up On Point picked up $3,00 for second. Jockey Ubaldo Luna had the riding call aboard the 6-year-old stakes winning son of multiple stakes sire Five Bar Cartel. Yasniel Vasquez owns the Ryan and Jude Robicheaux bred gelding out of La Jollan Queen by Streakin La Jolla. Winner of the Gentilly Dash Stakes in 2020, On Point has earned over $130,000.

Stakes-placed Packin A Punch, under jockey Everardo Rodriquez, finished half -a length back in the show position for owner TG Horse Racing LLC. Rosendo Valdez, Jr. trains the 6-year-old Toast To Dash gelding from the Packin Sixes mare El Streaker. Bred by Chris and Gary Ables, Packin A Punch has earned $107,154.

Streakin N The Wind, Strut For Petes Sake, Rh Shake Em Dreams and Escandalo completed the field. Bjs Going Going Going was scratched.

Live Quarter Horse racing will be conducted Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday through March 2. Beginning Sunday, March 6, the schedule changes to Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Two Thursday race cards will be added for the final two weeks of the season. Post time will be 1:00 p.m. (Central).
