Undefeated Pappas Fame Fastest from Second Day of Trials for Wyoming Bred Futurity

Undefeated Pappas Fame Fastest from Second Day of Trials for Wyoming Bred Futurity

ROCK SPRINGS, WY–SEPTEMBER 17, 2023–The Sunday card at Sweetwater included the second half of trials for the $150,000-estimated Wyoming Bred Futurity. Seven trials were held on each day (see related story) with the five fastest qualifiers from each day moving on to the final.

The sixth trial produced the top two fastest qualifiers as Pappas Fame defeated Pro Mona by a length and won his sixth straight race.

Pappas Fame ($2.80) set the fastest time of the 300-yard trials with :15.243 and earned a 109 speed index. Jesus Valenzuela was aboard the post-time favorite for trainer Kylie Valenzuela and owners Andrea and Eddie Jensen.

Ron and Laurie Moosman bred the Pappasito gelding out of their Maknmoves mare Makn Fame.

Pappas Fame is undefeated in six career starts and has won two stakes: the Wyoming Downs Futurity in August and the Powder River Wyoming Bred Futurity in June in Gillette. He has earned $159,799 to date.

Second fastest qualifier Pro Mono defeated the rest of the field by a length and finished in :15.421 with a 103 speed index.

Rick Hillstead trains, owns, and bred the Dustin Pro filly out of the Walk Thru Fire mare Monakura Sr. Jacquelyn Bobroff had the riding call on Sunday.

Pro Mono has won two of her five starts, including an allowance at Sweetwater prior to Sunday’s trial, with earnings of $8,345.

Cantinera won the fourth trial as the third fastest from the day and the fourth fastest overall in :15.460. The Pappasito filly led early and defeated fellow qualifier Jets Eyes by a head with a 102 speed index under Jesus Canales for trainer Sergio Canales.

Pedro Mena’s homebred will make her third start in a stakes race; she qualified to the Beehive Futurity in April and was third in the Ron Cook Wyoming Bred Futurity in June. She has two wins and $16,449 from six starts.

Cantinera’s dam, the Ivory James mare James Diva, won the Sweetwater Wyoming bred Futurity in 2013.
