Flying Wrangler Tops Second Night of RG1 Remington Park Futurity Trials

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 12, 2024–Flying Wrangler took advantage of a non-existent wind by the time his Remington Park Futurity trial came around on Friday, April 12, posting the fastest time of the night of 11 trials for the $854,775 final.

The event, restricted to eligible Oklahoma-bred 2-year-old American Quarter Horses, will be run on Saturday, April 27.

When the trials began on Friday night, there was a headwind of 17 mph that the horses in the early races had to battle.

Make no mistake, however, Flying Wrangler’s performance was more than impressive. It wasn’t all the dying wind and the outside post that defined this race.

The 2-year-old Oklahoma-bred gelded son of leading second-crop sire Flying Cowboy 123, out of the Okey Dokey Dale mare Docs Dusty Dale, rocketed out of the gate and had a half-length lead before the blink of an eye.

When the gelding hit the wire, he had won by 1-3/4 lengths. The difference in speed-indexes from him to the second horse in his trial was 93 vs. 84.

Flying Wrangler’s win was the second in as many tries for the Stacey Capps-trained gelding. On March 24, Flying Wrangler broke his maiden at Remington Park by a half-length into a headwind of 25 mph. Dusty Rose Ranch bred this horse and owns him. It was Capps’ fifth win in 25 starts this meet for a solid 20 percent win rate.

From the first crop of champion Uncle D, Heavens Uncle posted the second fastest clocking of :16.752 seconds on night 2, a 91-speed index into an 11 mph headwind.  Racing for owner-breeder Sherry Gilmore and trained by Guillermo Valdivia, Heavens Uncle is out of the stakes-winning Streak And Dash mare Heavens Assured.

Heavens Uncle is from the family of Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity(RG2) winner Regard With Respect. Bryan Candanosa had the riding call.

A $40,000 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate Flirtacious Showboat, racing for owners Tyler and Naia Graham, posted the third fastest time on Night 2. Jockey Jorge Torres rode the Kiss My Hocks filly to 1-1/4 length win in :16.881 seconds in trail 5 for trainer Clinton Crawford.

Marty and Shalia Powers bred the filly out of Splish Splash by Ivory James. She is from the family of Heritage Place Derby(G2) winner Cuz Eye Said, RG3 winner Firstdown Goal To Go, and stakes winner Stats The Way I Roll, C K Special Treasure.

Trainer-owner-breeder Leonardo Alcala qualified his third finalist for the Remington Park Futurity as he got Js Freightrain into the hunt, finishing with the fourth-fastest time Friday night of :16.889 seconds, into a 10 mph headwind. Ali Rivers was riding.

Alcala also had two others make the top five on the first night of trials on April 11.

He owns, trains, and bred two of the three. On the first night of trials, Coronita KO got the third fastest time. His half-brother Js Freightrain is by world champion sire Freighttrain B from As And Js, a multiple stakes winner at Remington Park, earning of $531,134. During her career the Apollitical Jess mare won the Grade 1 Junos Request Stakes here in 2019.

A $10,500 Heritage Place Yearling Sale graduate Rr Eagles Path races for owner Leopoldo Farias. Jockey Roman Cruz rode the son of Big Lew to the fifth fastest clocking of :16.988 seconds Friday night for trainer Erick Rodriguez Garcia.

Reliance Ranches LLC bred the colt from the One Famous Eagle mare Kool Edge. The second dam is stakes winner Triffle and the third dam is the two-time champion mare Corona Kool.

Jockey Francisco Calderon is the only rider to have qualified two horses in the finals, both on the first night of trials on Thursday. He had the fastest qualifier Thursday with Cowgirls Can Fly for Alcala.
