OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–APRIL 13, 2024–Cowboys R Myheros defeats heavy favorite Rj Having Fun in a slight upset for the fastest qualifying time to the $169,175 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Derby on Saturday.
Guided by jockey Edwin Escobedo, Cowboys R Myheros never lost focus and came to the lead mid call for the win by 1/2-length in :20.033 seconds. The son of Flying Cowboy 123 clocked an 85 speed index while running into a 15 mph headwind. The 400-yard upset paid $20.40 to win on 8/1 odds.
Tonight's victory is only the second time the three-year-old gelding has visited the winner's circle for his owner/breeder Brenda Reiswig. He was a finalist in last year's Black Gold C&G Futurity and the Northlands Juvenile Stakes. The $8,784 winner's share of the purse increases Cowboys R Myheros' career earnings to $24,957.
Trainer Jason Olmstead conditioned the sorrel gelding out of Red Velvet Hero by Valiant Hero, as well as two other qualifiers Cardiac Cowboy and Midnight Politics.
Jess A Salty Candy, piloted by Ali Rivera, pulls in the lead just in time to win his trial heat by 1/2-length in :20.050 seconds for the second fastest qualifying time.
The son of Jess Good Candy hadn't won a race since breaking his maiden in his first start as a freshman until this year. Now the Jess A Salty Candy is two for two and holds a spot in the Grade 1 Derby finals.
Trainer John Stinebaugh saddled Jess A Salty Candy owners Stacy Barr and Carol Addison. The three-time winner now has $41,491 in the bank after cashing in the $8,784 winner's check for trial #2.
Breeder PV Quarter Horse Farm LLC sold Jess A Salty Candy for $50,000 in the 2022 Ruidoso Select Yearling Sale. The bay gelding is out of This Candys Salty by Pyc Paint Your Wagon.
