Cosmic Marfa Stays Perfect In Roche Equine Veterinary Futurity, Yr Baby Lew Wins Denny Weight

JEROME ID–JUNE 16, 2024–Fastest qualifier Cosmic Marfa kept his 3-for-3 record perfect following a gate-to-wire winning performance in the $25,800 Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity Sunday afternoon at the Jerome County Fair.

Jockey Raphael Romero guided the son of third-crop sire The Marfa Lights to a neck win over Aint She Something while clocking 17.695 seconds for the 350 yards, a 101-speed index into a 10 mph crosswind.

Owner-trainer Abel Romero paid $6,500 for the gelding at the 2023 Heritage Place Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City. Michael and Beth Harper bred the colt in Oklahoma from the Apollitical Jess mare Halley.  Cosmic Marfa used the $12,384 winner's purse to boost his bankroll to $15,954.

Runner-up Aint Shee Something earned $5,289 for owner-breeder Pedro Vega. Trainer Ramiro Fregoso named jockey Oscar Villa to ride the Carters Cartel filly out of Lynda Dasher by Igotyourtac. The Idaho-bred has earned $6,939 in four starts.

M E Mitzy, an Idaho-bred daughter of thoroughbred champion sprinter Mitole, finished 2-1/2 lengths back to earn $2,580 for third. Jarrett Mills trains the bay filly for owner-breeder Dave Merritt. Federico Borgas rode the 2-year-old out of M E Five Bar Dilly by Five Bar Cartel.

Hesa Handsome Prinze, M E Verstablegenious, Paint Me Mo Famous, Orange Vodka Deluxe, and Idaho Jess completed the official order of finish.

Denny Weight Overnight Futurity

Yr Baby Lew was a neck winner over Lively in the $3,300 Denny Weight Overnight Futurity (not black type), a consolation for horses that did not qualify for the Roche Equine Veterinary Services Futurity.

Trainer Weston Smith named jockey Eric Ayala to ride Yr Baby Lew for owner Wesley Pierson. Bred in Utah by Reed Pierson, the daughter of multiple stakes sire Big Lew earned $1,980 for the effort.  She is out of the Dash Ta Fame mare Lucy Fame.

Lively, a son of multiple stake sire Texas Icon, picked up $825 for second. Also from the Weston Smith barn, Lively races for owner Brooks Keller. Martha F. Wells bred the brown gelding in Arizona from the Favorite Cartel mare Favorite Chicklet.

Sheknowsshesmokn, racing for owner-breeder Edward Jamison, earned $495 for third. Glen Jamison trains the Daguerre filly out of Smokn Mirrors by Jumpn. Jesus Flores had the riding call.

This Guys Lil Rebel, Shezappealing, Exempttonnn, and Nh Downdraft Express completed the field.  Gw Dusty Lane bucked and lost his rider.
