ALBUQUERQUE, NM–SEPTEMBER 2, 2024–It was noses at the wire in a four-way photo finish on Monday for the $1,076,535 All American Derby [G1] at the Downs at Albuquerque. Dashing Tres hailed the winner, followed by Visa, Shoeless and The Marksman V, respectively.
Jockey Bryan Candanosa and trainer Toby Keeton teamed up for their second stakes win of the day, the first being the All American Juvenile with Aguila Rapida. Keeton got the trifecta, with the top three finalists coming from his stables.
Keeton trained four of the ten qualifiers going into the Derby, so his leading rider, Candanosa, had to choose which one to mount in the finals.
Candanosa said, "It was a tough decision. I banged my head every night, but finally, I made the choice, and it worked out. Even if he didn't win it, I would've been happy for Toby and the team. They have all worked so hard."
Dashing Tres broke from the six hole, and after an early bump, he regained his stride and took the lead at the final call. Favored second to win, he clocked a 104 speed index in 20.951 seconds, paying $6.40 to win on 2-1 odds.
This is the first time Dashing Tres' owner-breeder Bob McClure has won the All American Derby [G1]. The sorrel gelding has won his last four starts, including the Rainbow Derby [G1]. He placed third in the Ruidoso Derby [G1] and was fifth in the All American Futurity [G1] finals last year.
