Mr Royal Cartel Slight Surprise In $80,000 Far West Futurity at Grants Pass Sunday

GRANTS PASS, OR–OCTOBER 13, 2024–Let go at 8-1 odds, Mr Royal Cartel lugged in early under jockey Jaime Lopez before rallying to a head win in a blanket finish to Sunday's $80,000 Far West Futurity at Grants Pass Downs.

Lopez guided Mr. Royal Cartel over the 400 yards in 19.793 seconds, equaling a 96-speed index. It was the second career win in six starts for the son of The Cartel Hawk. The $32,000 winner's purse boosted his earnings to $46,469.

Trainer Hector Magallanes saddled the Oregon homebred to his second win in six starts for owner-breeder Ismael Villarreal.  Out of the Royal Shake Em mare Miss Royal Rumble, Mr Royal Cartel was second in the John Deere Emerald Downs Juvenile Challenge in August.

Mr Royal Cartel rewarded his backers with a $17 win payoff, $14 to place, and $10.40 to show.

Hunny Moon finished a head back for owner-trainer Ricardo Mariles-Santos to earn $13,600 for second. Bobby D. Cox bred the Moonin The Eagle filly in Oklahoma from the Corona Cartel mare All Biznez. Jose Benjamin Lopez was riding the $30,398 earner, also a finalist in the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass and the Elko Mountain Futurity.

The fastest qualifier, Ccr Political Wrap, and the second fastest qualifier, Mysterious Cartel, finished neck-and-neck in a dead heat for third. They each took home $7,600  for the effort.

Hector Magallanes trains Ccr Political Wrap for owner-breeders Cedar Creek Tree Farm Ranch and Racing. Jose Antonio Figueroa rode the Apollitical Jess filly from the Walk Thru Fire mare Wrap You Up. She has earned $17,963 in seven starts.

Multiple stakes-placed Mysterious Cartel races for owner Luis Gonzalez. Jose Rosales Gomez named jockey Cesar Moreno to ride the Five Bar Cartel colt out of Mysterious Night by Valiant Hero. Second in the Sweetwater Downs Futurity and Beehive Juvenile Stakes, Mysterious Cartel has earned $47,635 in eight starts.

Completing the field were Eyez On Corona, Famous Prizes, Red Rain, Brand Artist, Lo Pinas Cartel Jr, and Coming At Ya.
