Fastest Qualifier Presido Pete Returns To Win $102,555 Lucile Rowe Derby

AURORA, CO—NOVEMBER 17, 2024—Fastest qualifier Presido Pete returned Sunday to win the $102,555 Lucile Rowe Derby by one length at Arapahoe Park.

Under jockey Fernando Fonseca-Soto, Presido Pete popped the gate and drifted out as he cleared the field while covering the 350 yards in 17.847 seconds, a 97-speed index into a 9 mph crosswind. It was the fifth career win for the 3-year-old son of multiple stakes sire The Marfa Lights.

Haley N. Hobbs saddled the colt for owner-breeder Francisco Cornejo. Bred in Colorado from the Wave Carver mare Tahiti Wave, Presido Pete earned $41,136 to nearly double his earnings to $79,326.

Runner-up Six Good Kicks races for owner George Seward and is trained by Fernando Ivan Manriquez-Garay.  Jockey Jonathan Dominguez had the riding call aboard the stakes-winning daughter of champion Jess Good Candy. Seward and Jose Flores bred last year's Cherry Creek Futurity winner from the Tres Seis mare Kickin Seis. The $20,625 payday boosted her earnings to more than $74,000.

Ridden by jockey Valente Vorrath, El Manguito finished half-a-length back to earn $12,421 for third. Edy Ontiveros trains the Carters Cartel gelding for owner La Despedida Racing LLC. Also bred by Ontiveros from the First Down Dash mare Bp First Down Policy, El Manguito has earned $31,772.

A Beautiful Flare, Separtist Kicker, Where Is The Party, Schedule Me A Zoom, Interest In Ur Eyes, and Ps Miss Daisy completed the field. First Prize Grown Go and Little Wagon were scratched.
