OKLAHOMA CITY, OK–MARCH 30, 2025–The Gonzales family of trainers finished off a near perfect week when James J. “JJ” Gonzales II and his trainee, I Got Thiss, won the feature race Sunday night in allowance company at Remington Park.

She was returning to action for the first time this year, and the form that saw her win a stakes here last year.

I Got Thiss, a 4-year-old Oklahoma-bred mare, trained by James, one of three Gonzales family members conditioning horses here, was the winner of the $189,000 Remington Park Oaks last year, reserved for 3-year-old Oklahoma-bred fillies.

She was trained then by Juvenal Licona-Vazquez and won the Oaks at 21-1 odds on April 29, 2024. On Sunday, she won for the first time since that black-type victory after five subsequent tries.

A daughter of the prominent sire Apollitical Jess, I Got Thiss is from the Tres Seis mare Senorita Tres. She was booted home to victory by Cristian Esqueda, who also won on her in last year’s Oaks. She won Sunday’s allowance for non-winners of three races lifetime by three-quarters of a length as the 2-1 wagering favorite.

The I Got Thiss trip to the winner’s circle completed a five-for-five week for the “JJ.” His son, James J. Gonzales III, won three of the six starters he sent out this week, and his brother Sebastian went one-for-one on the week. Combined, the family won 9-of-12 races, an incredible accomplishment.

I Got Thiss’ sire, Apollitical Jess, threw three All American Futurity winners – KJ Desparado, Apocalyptical Jess and Mr Jess Jenkins – not to mention American Quarter Horse Association World Champion Empressum.

I Got Thiss won the Oaks last year at 400 yards and Sunday’s allowance at 330 yards. She earned $18,165 to add to her lifetime bankroll for owner Bryton Dewald of Jamestown, N.D., and now has a running line of 17 starts, three wins, two seconds and four thirds for career earnings of $124,421, with $103,737 of that total banked in Remington Park action.

The mare was a $45,000 purchase at the 2022 Heritage Place September Yearling Sale in Oklahoma City.

The winner stopped the timer at 330 yards in :16.554 seconds over a fast track, earning a speed index of 97. She finished ahead of runner-up BV Mr D (5-2 second betting favorite), who was another head in front of Lews Muddybuddy (3-1) as the top three favorites finished in exact order.

I Got Thiss was bred in Oklahoma by Walter R. “Dick” Harrison.

Remington Park racing continues Thursday through Sunday, April 3-6 with the first race nightly at 6pm and Sunday action at 4pm. Trials for the Remington Park Futurity will be contested on April 4 & 5, while trials for the Remington Park Derby and Remington Park Oaks will take place on April 6.
