OKLAHOMA CITY, OK—APRIL 13, 2025—It's uncertain which was more impressive Sunday night, that Dickey Bob reached the half-million dollar mark in career earnings, that he won for the 31st time in his career as a 10-year-old or that he still has the burning desire to get the job done.
Trainer Jason Olmstead has done a tremendous job of treating the old man with kid gloves, allowing him to continue his career with this kind of soundness.
"We are proud of Dickey Bob and his long career," Olmstead said earlier Sunday on the OQHRA-Remington Park Quarter Racing Digest radio show. "If he can get away from the gate, he might get his picture taken one more time."
Olmstead's Sunday morning thoughts were clairvoyant as Dickey Bob broke from the starting gate like he was shot from a cannon in the 110-yard event dubbed "The Blink of An Eye" on Extreme Race Day at Remington Park. Dickey Bob found enough effort late to just get his head up at the wire to edge out the rest of the field that hit the line in a blanket finish.
The 10-year-old Minnesota-bred by Apollitical Jess, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More, earned $15,300 for the allowance win, improving his career record to 68 starts, 31 wins, nine seconds and eight thirds for a $512,719 bankroll.
Dickey Bob is the all-time winningest Minnesota-bred in Quarter Horse racing. Included in his 31 wins are 14 victories in stakes races. He has won four times from 19 Remington Park attempts.
Dickey Bob won the short race by a nose in a time of :06.889 for a speed-index of 104 over the fast track, just a blink of an eye off the track record for the distance of :06.784. That was set by Jakes Charming Jody on May 25, 2012.
Jockey Armando Alvidrez was in the saddle for Olmstead and owner Lunderborg LLC (Bruce Lunderborg) of Gibbon, Minn. He is a home-bred for Lunderborg, who said Dickey Bob has always been healthy and will be retired after this year.
This was a true blanket finish as Dickey Bob finished a nose better than Cowgirl MP (14-1), who was another nose ahead of third-place finisher Paint Me Prettie (6-1). Fourth-place runner Lil Rider (30-1) completed the superfecta a head back of Paint Me Prettie. With those large box car odds in the top four, the 10-cent superfecta paid $1,148.82. The $2 exacta returned $289.60 and the 50-cent trifecta was $484.70.
Dickey Bob (6-1) returned to his backers $13.80 to win, $9.40 to place and $5.60 to show. The 7-5 favorite in the race, Trademarque, did not beat a horse in the nine-horse field.
Dickey Bob, a specialist as a short-runner, won for the fourth time in 10 starts at the distance of 110 yards. He won for the first time since Sept. 2, 2024, when he made it to the winner's circle at 110 yards at Prairie Meadows in Iowa.
Remington Park racing resumes Thursday through Saturday, April 17-19. Saturday, April 19 is Remington Park Futurity Night. First race nightly is 6pm-Central. There is no Remington Park racing on Easter.
