POCATELLO, ID–MAY 25, 2025–Mercurio turned in a strong performance to capture the $38,925 Pocatello Downs Spring Classic Futurity, outkicking a solid field of two-year-olds in Sunday’s 300-yard final.
Ridden by Jaime Lopez, Mercurio stopped the clock in 15.476 seconds for a 102 speed index on a fast track, earning $17,904 for the win. Breaking his maiden, the gelding broke well and won wire-to-wire by three-quarters of a length over Camila Girl. The victory marks his first stakes score from two starts.
Bred in Mexico by Mauro Lozano, the son of Big Lew, was purchased for $12,000 in last year’s Heritage Place Fall Mixed Sale. He is out of Miss Secret Eyes, a mare by Mr Eye Opener. He is owned by Tryn Magallanes and trained by Hector Magallanes.
Camila Girl, a brown filly by The Louisiana Cartel, ran second in a solid effort under jockey Oscar Villa. She is out of Misterious Lady, by Mr Eye Opener. Bred and owned in Washington by Arturo Fuentes, she is trained by Jose Rosales. She chased the winner gamely and earned $7,785 for the runner-up finish, missing by just a neck.
Finishing third was Fifty Two Special, a brown gelding by The Louisiana Cartel and out of The Streakin Clean, by Streakin La Jolla. Bred in Idaho by Leonardo Olmos, the colt races for Javier Olmos. He is trained by Lorenzo Marquez-Campo and was ridden by Mark Jasso.
Rgr Eyes Famous, Rp Pretty Woman, El Alfarero Boy, Ethix, Just S, Buliko, and Nellie Melba complete the order of finish.
