Rjs Boss Surges Late to Capture Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby at Century Mile

EDMONTON, AB—AUGUST 15, 2025—In a thrilling blanket finish, Rjs Boss ($13.30) closed powerfully to prevail by a head in the $24,627(US) Alberta Stallion Stakes Derby at Century Mile Racetrack.

Covering the 330 yards in 17.152 over a fast track with a strong 19 mph tailwind, the brown gelding earned a 95 speed index and picked up the winner’s share of $11,0789(US) for owner Glenn K. Wills.

It was the fourth win, first stakes, in 14 starts for Rjs Boss, boosting his bankroll to $50,072. Bred in Alberta by T. Copithorne & G. Wills, Rjs Boss is a 3-year-old son of multiple stakes sire Jd Wagon Boss out of Rj Bitterroot Babe, by El Mistral.

Trained by Buckey Stockwell and ridden by Alexander Marti, the $30,000 AQHRA Yearling Sale graduate surged in the final strides to snatch victory from late-charging Surely Im Corona, who finished second by a head.

Surely Im Corona, a black filly by Obsessed With Corona out of Surely Im First, by First Timber, was bred and owned by Shirley Laczo, trained by Brant Laczo, and ridden by Jesus Ambrocio Medina. She earned $4,185(US) for her determined runner-up effort. A stakes winner, Surely Im Crona has banked $30,480 in 10 career starats.

Flash Me A Corona, also sired by Obsessed With Corona, finished a length back in third. The brown gelding out of Look Back Moonflash, by First Moonflash, was bred by Ralph Danard, is owned by Janet Patriquin and Ralph E. Danard, trained by Craig Smith, and ridden by Ricardo Moreno.

A $4,700 2023 AQHRA Yearling Sale purchase, he banked $2,4062(US) for the placing and pushed his earnings to $64,649.

Completing the order of finish was Inseperable Cruise, Ima Runnin Rose, Western Lillie Rey, O La Dee Da, Moccasin Annie, De la Roza, and Rustys Gansito.

Pari-mutuel payoffs included: Rjs Boss $13.30 to win, $5.10 to place, and $3.00 to show; Surely Im Corona $7.60 to place, $3.70 to show; Flash Me a Corona $2.30 to show. The $2 exacta (6-7) returned $93.90.
