EDMONTON, AB—AUGUST 16, 2025—In a powerful late surge, Rocn On West captured the $41,650 (US) Alberta Stallion Stakes Futurity at 35-1 odds on Saturday at Century Mile, earning the winner’s share of $18,741(US) for 94-year-old breeder/owner Cliff Whitelock.

The 2-year-old gelding by Western Moonshine out of Rocn the Timbers by First Timber broke his maiden while stopping the clock in 17.419 seconds over a fast track into a 10 mph headwind.

Trained by Brant Laczo and ridden by Daniel Garcia, Rocn On West bounced off a fourth-place effort in the trials to stalk the leaders early before asserting command late, finishing three-quarters of a length clear of his nearest rival.

A breeder with the American Quarter Horse Association for over fifty years, Whitelock has imported numerous stallions to Canada over the decades, including sons of legendary sires Mr Bar None and Moon Deck. His dedication has been rewarded—Rocn On West is his first stakes winner!

Finishing second was One Tough Cerveza, a gelding by multiple stakes sire Cerveza Corona out of Toughie by Stel Corona, bred by Charles G. Stojan.

Owned by Barry and Janice Sather, trained by Misael Moreno, and ridden by Daniel Tavares, One Tough Cerveza earned $8,330(US) for the runner-up effort after a late surge. Winless in five starts this season, One Tough Cerveza has earned $15,908.

Third place went to the fastest qualifier, Hot Cerveza, also by Cerveza Corona, out of Getit Hot by Walk Thru Fire, bred by Charles G. Stojan.

The 2-year-old gelding, campaigned by Jerry Stojan, trained by William Leech, and piloted by Ricardo Moreno, picked up $4,997(US) for the show placing, finishing a neck behind the runner-up. He has earned $8,072 in two starts.

Pari-mutuel returns rewarded backers handsomely, with Rocn On West paying $73.10 to win, $37.20 to place, and $10.60 to show. One Tough Cerveza returned $10.70 to place and $5.70 to show, while Hot Cerveza paid $2.80.

Cervezas Fire (4th), Snow Boss (5th), Speedy Wonder (6th), Totoughforyou (7th), and Northfork Knockout (8th) completed the order of finish.

With his first career stakes victory, Rocn On West signaled himself as one of the top Alberta-breds 2-year-olds of his crop, rewarding his connections in the rich Futurity final.
