EVANSTON, WY–JULY 2, 2026–Seven trials for the $18,000-added Gary Waite Maiden Stakes were contested Thursday at Wyoming Downs, with the ten fastest qualifiers advancing to the July 18 final. The 330-yard stakes is restricted to horses three years old and older that were maidens as of January 1, 2026.
CGR Jag Wire posted the fastest qualifying time of the evening when he captured the fifth trial in 16.719 seconds, earning a 97 speed index. Under jockey Eric Ayala, the three-year-old gelding rallied from mid-pack and finished strongly to score by 1/2-length.
A homebred racing for CG Racing, LLC, CGR Jag Wire is trained by Jarrett Mills. The Wyoming-bred gelding is sired by The Louisiana Cartel and out of the Mr Jess Perry mare High Spirited Jess. The victory improved his record to 5-3-1-0 with earnings of $29,044. Earlier this season, he won the Weber Downs Maiden Frolic.
Ronnie Racer recorded the second-fastest qualifying mark after winning the fourth trial in 16.792 seconds for a 95 speed index. Ridden by Dakota Wood, the four-year-old gray gelding narrowly prevailed by a head.
Bred, owned, and trained by Jay McKee, Ronnie Racer is by Pappasito out of the Thoroughbred mare Scandalous Miss, by Hansen. The victory was his first in nine starts, moving his record to 9-1-0-3 with earnings of $14,276.
Big California Lew secured the third-fastest qualifying time when she finished second to CGR Jag Wire in the fifth trial, stopping the clock in 16.793 seconds with a 95 speed index.
Ridden by Minor Arana, the three-year-old filly races for owner-trainer Martha Maldonado and was bred by Pedro Mena. The daughter of Big Lew and the Foose mare California Gurl now sports a record of 9-0-3-2 with earnings of $9,470.
